I have not gotten a cruze for a rental yet, I normally get a full size or a SUV when have to rent a ride (about 3 days a year) .

From what little exposure I have had with them I must say its GM making leaps and bounds form where they used to be.

I test drove a Cruze when they came to my university. I agree that I like the car & if i was in the market for a FWD econobox that's probably what I would purchase. Fairly sporty and "fast".

I rented one over a vacation and liked it.

It handled well enough and zippy enough to enjoy the Road to Hanna. And seats were comfortable, had good features, etc.

I also think that the Focus is attractive and glad Ford finally brought a real one to America. So they have good compacts now, and the 200 is still shit.

But the reason for the thread bump was Polk released that Cruze ranked #8 in worldwide sales [Obviously major victory for Focus too]:

Having the cadavalier and shitbox focus turn into legimate cars is definitely a plus. I also hear that the smaller, lighter Sonic with the Cruze engine is a good and fun econobox, like what I hear about the Fit (and Fiesta).

+1 on Focus, it looks damn good too from the front end. Co-worker has the ST model, doesn't look bad at all.

I wanna try out that new Sonic Turbo just for kicks. I wonder if they'll have a Cruze SS with a turbo engine, too. I read such great reviews about the Cobalt SS but then when I sat in one at an auto show I felt like I was sitting in a Tonka truck. GM interiors have come a long way in the past few years; still have a ways to go, though.

But it still handles like a fun hatchback (though the Mazda was a bit more fun to drive). Sadly it has been anything but reliable :( I'm actually hoping to sell it and get in to an '03 540i/6 Msport

I just don't know how new cars can NOT be reliable...

We rented a Chevy Cruze in Atlanta and I actually thought that it was pretty nice. Styling also looks nice. The Nissan Altima has been by far the worst rental car I've driven.

I was selling Fords for a while and even though the Focus was a Ford, I was under the assumption that they were reliable cars from it's European background.

as far as Deawoo you can go even farther back as the Pontiac Leman's (88-93) was the first built by them for the US market for GM ,and it was an Opel Kadette E series ,Opel was done with the series and sent everything to Deawoo all the stamping and castings ,so Deawoo just ground off the opel emblem in the casting and added thier own. the relationship is still going to this day as most of the GM line is global in development .and most midsize and compacts are based on Opel platforms ,some get gm motors most just stick with the Opel powerplant,if you lift the hood and see "Eco-tec" something its Opel based. the Caddy is the Vectra/Omega platform, we now get the Astra ,the Aveo is the Corsa, Pontiac solstice, saturn sky are the opel GT, saturn Aura is a Opel Vectra , Buick regal is a rebadged Opel Insignia on and on

so the Cruze is just a new Opel delta 2 platform

Cruze already comes with a turbo engine, it's just a 1.4L. There is a Cruze RS which is basically the nicest interior, 1.4 turbo engine, 6 speed and the 18" alloy wheels. Although I'm not in the market for a new car and haven't looked that much, I still wouldn't buy a Cruze. Too many come in to work needing cooling system work, and comparing them to interiors in new Fords, VW, or even a Mazda 3, everything in any GM product feels cheap and flimsy.
