you obviously wont be tossing the vert around a track, so why not keep the 318 how it is, a wonderful car to drive just not that pretty at the moment. and keep your vert for cruising with. you dont need to fix the 318 right away it runs and drives fine, and its not your DD anyway, so why not buy your vert its own parts and leave the 318 alone until you have the means to fix its body if thats your wish. idk why you wouldn't daily the 318 in the winter as opposed to the vert but hey its yours you do what you want to do and dont let anyone tell you otherwise lol

These cars are like crack. After 2 Cabrios projects last year I had to draw a line and since Im not convinced I'll be satisfied with the body work (since I dont do it myself) Ive put off writing the check. It's still a blast to drive (I confirmed that again today) but its like going out with a giant zit on your nose. Even if you put a bandaid on it, everyone knows whats under it

...and the barn find has a hardtop so its good all year round...and I'm annoyed that I have a lock rebuild kit for the drivers door and its too cold to deal with it.

What you suggest has merit, but from a practical point of view Im not so sure. Other than the rear shocks there is a lot of work involved in swapping all the bits and pieces (as in doing the same job 2x to save $xx) and frankly, without doing the body work on the coupe the "special parts" and the way its dialed in and drives is its real value.

...and when was the last time someone came in here and said "oh wow, I found this totally stock M10 e30 and it only needs a bunch of body work but I have to have it. How much should I offer" ?...lol

To do all that after 14 years would be like telling your soon to be X that you want the boob job back.
well, i understand your point of view, i guess.....if it were me, i would have no problems switching parts around to the better car but thats just me. it won't cost you anything but your time. maybe two or three days max.

you obviously have an emotional attachment to the 318 that you have barely alluded to here. it doesn't sound like you have the ability to look at the situation objectively. i don't know your financial situation, but if money is tight it certainly doesn't make sense to buy those aftermarket parts again. i guess if you can afford two cars, then great. spend the money to purchase that stuff twice. i assume that you are not wiping your ass with 20 dollar bills since you posted this thread the way you did to begin with.

if you can only realistically only afford/want one car, you are crazy to sell those aftermarket parts with the 318 only to buy them again later.

i love your analogy about the boob job. i laughed my ass off. however, this situation isn't like that at all. if you don't intend to keep the 318, remove your emotional attachment from it, take off the parts, fix it up a bit and sell it for a grand or so. you will be much better off from a financial point of view. the argument that there is value in the way the 318 drives is really only value to you and not the next owner. they are going to be salivating over getting a good deal on it so they can get a good deal on your parts that you will be kicking yourself for not using on your new "love". that is pretty much it.

if you can't detach yourself, just forget everything i said above and do what you wish.

This is like therapy isn't it? You can't talk to a bartender about E30 love and shrinks are too expensive. Let the 318 keep its boobs, but sell it to me like they're sagging. I know she's got that big zit on her nose, I could learn to love her still.

Sure Im attached to it. My right hand has spent more time working on that car than it has...ummm...signing my name

Again though, not many of its parts will fit on the Cabrio. I also really dont think there is any value in downgrading it and Im not going to take an e30 out of circulation by parting it. If I do let it go it will be to someone who sees enough value in it that I'll go buy new parts.

I'll see how I feel when the AW Cabrio finds a new home <hint hint>

That must be why I have 4..and am having issues with the sagging one.

My pleasure. I trust you'll come to grips with your dilemma, and the outcome will be satisfactory. I must now reluctantly leave r3v and study the poetry of Jack Spicer. The doctor is out.

Which is exactly why I'm here for Dr Frank's therapy sessions. There's also a back story to this car that makes it even more complicated beyond what I have posted.

I'm road testing life without it but really can't see myself undoing a 14 year build.
