    settle an argument

was there ever a 325... not an e or an I...

from my knowledge it came with the 2.7 liter engine and was a lower spec model than the E... my friend is saying no that the E was the only car to come with the 2.7 in the e30 platform...

I bet him beer I was right

Perfect example is the 88 seta its simply a 325 they dropped the e designation after 87 even though there was both 325 and 325e in 87 and 86

Yep. We still call them "eta" because they still have the eta motor. But not all etas are designated with an E.

however, i do believe that no setas came with the e designation, just the 325 badge.

That is correct and I think is the only ETA variant that was badged that way. The SuperETA wasn't an ETA and and it wasn't an I.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Technically, both of you were wrong. You thought they were lower spec then a normal eta, but they are the same, and your friend was wrong in believing they never existed.

The 1988 Super ETA is neither an "i" nor an "e", simply a "325".

                        Hope it's good beer!

after 86 the E was dropped, 87 eta and 88 seta only came with 325.

For 84-85 there were only the 318i and 325e. In 86, BMW dropped the 318i and replaced it with a base model 325. This base model had an ETA engine but it had no OBC, no premium sound, no sport seats, standard 4 spoke wheel, etc to make it affordable. Therefore, the 325e was the next trim level up. That's the reason some ETA's had "325" and some had "325e." It had OBC, 3 spoke sport steering wheel (not m tech), sport seats, power sunroof, etc. Then there's the 325eS and so on. There are some 86 and 87 325e's but you won't see an 88. In 88, the ETA engine was dropped but they still had a 325 base model, this time with a unique hybrid e/i type engine that was commonly referred to as the "Super ETA."

                            The breakdown is like this..
                            84 318i/325e
                            85 318i/325e
                            86 325/325e/325eS
                            87 325/325e/325eS/325i/325iS,iC
                            88 325/325i/325iS,iX,iC/M3
                            89 325i/325iS,iX,iC/M3
                            90 318i/318iS/325i/325iS,iX,iC/M3
                            91 318i/318iS/325i,iX,iC/M3

Keep in mind, seats, OBC, steering wheels, stereo's, LSD's, etc. are easily changed and more likely than not since these cars are 30 years old but I've been around these cars since new, growing up in a BMW shop and this is how I remember it.
