PROFIT is the number 1 priority for BMW these days.
Oh Jesus....exhaust manis in the V with intakes on the banks, turbos sitting in the valleys, now intakes on the right and exhaust on the left!?

Australians must be developing these engines. That's it.

Which engine is that? I'm only aware of the 2.0 L N20 petrol and the N47 diesel, which is phenomenal as mikeedler pointed out. It generates up to 218 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque while achieving 50 mpg. I can't wait till it arrives in North America, which should be within a few months (a 328d was at the Montreal Auto Show). I'd love to replace the gas guzzling V8's in our Land Rovers with that engine. :)

A new 328d spotted outside BMW's Styer Plant:

Plug and Play Wiring Harness Adapters for S54, S50, M54 and more.

This thread is proof of why none of the alarmists in the GW thread get the bigger picture. You don't feel the burden of having an ecofascist on your back every step you make in the states.

This engine certainly wasn't made with the passion put into designing generations of straight six engines, although good engineering was applied. This engine won't keep hauling after 200K miles like it was made a month ago, although many will praise its consumption.
You can argue all day about placement and displacement, but the fact is that this engine is made to outweigh the production of large V8/V10s, not because BMW wants to, but because the EU says manufacturer fleets have to meet CO2 standards (prime reason to buy Mini in the first place). This engine is not made to thrill the driver and out-live even its own shell in 25 years, it is made to satisfy bureaucrats in Brussels.

This engine is like settling for fat kid tits, when you know you could be rocking those firm Dcups all day long.
Screw fat kid tits! And screw you, EU!

You bring up a good point. I would like to see if these engines will hold up to the BMW name when it comes to reliability. Our straight sixes are good for at least 200k without a overhaul. Replace a few sensors here and there and it keeps on going. These engines make impressive numbers for their size which leads me to believe they will wear faster than what our average under-powered engines make. That said, the only way to find out is to see how they fair years down the road. Eh, what do I know, I'm no engineer! :p

I was gonna say. Unless that is some really fucked up alternator with a shit ton of unnecessary extra parts. That car is NOT FWD.

That looks longitude mounted to me. Where are you seeing the FWD besides the article assuming BMW will.

I will never buy a bmw with anything smaller than a straight 6. Even if that means I keep having to buy older cars.
Haven't you ever seen Russian Nesting Dolls? They work like that.

BMW has the technology to slam out a FWD vehicle....and has mentioned it before.

It will happen. For now, thank Jesus for Mini so they can apply that shit to those shitboxes and keep the lineup pure.

But I feel soon it will be tainted by ass draggers.

I didn't think this thread would become a hate FWD thread, but since it is going to happen you have the right. :) Yes, BMW is making a FWD car. The new 1-Series Gran Turismo "shares the next-generation Mini's front-wheel-drive architecture and is equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain whose heart is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine." -From http://www.caranddriver.com/news/bmw...-and-info-news

As Fusion pointed out though, I'm sure BMW wouldn't be doing this if they didn't have to meet new strict requirements for efficiency and emissions. They have to make cars that get amazing gas mileage if they want to keep selling their larger high power cars on the upper end. I'm not sure what all the new requirements are in the EU but in the U.S. automakers have to meet a fleet average of 35.5 mpg by 2016 and 55.4 mpg by 2025. I have about 300,000km on my 2000 320d e46 touring. It's a crappy 4 banger turbo diesel. At 13 years old beating it to death on the autobahn since almost new, Never had to touch anything on the motor, and still gets about 6,1L to 100 km-- really close to 40 miles per gallon.
not bad for a daily turd 4 cyl.

Many of the Ford guys are super excited about the new 3cyl 1.0L ecoboost engine in the Fiesta. It has been confirmed for North America. I can see BMW also bringing over a 3 cylinder if Ford does well with the Fiesta.
