Anybody Drive Volvos?

I would stay earlier than 98, easier to work on, more like a BMW. I had a v70, and 98 IMO was the last year a backyard guy could service them reasonably. AND in 98 the motors changed at some point, to much harder to service set ups. The "bricks" can be fun. THey are the older 240 series. My father has one, and we did a suspension rebuild, sway bars and a brake upgrade, amoung other creature comforts, and honestly its fun to drive. Stock motor, stock 5spd. more fun that my honda. Also my fathers 240 is a tank, runs on regular, and never failed him once. Yea its no streamlined looker, but for what it is, I would almost sell my 05 civic to have his car. Both are 4drs. My 98 was a wagon, and that was quick considering its size a weight, and also handled well with all things considered. He car has 400k on it, my wagon had over 200k.Leave a comment:

What Volvos did you have specifically? I know that in terms of handling they're not at the same level as Audi/BMW/MB.Yes, at one point in my life I did drive Volvo's, and I have vowed to do so exactly never more times. I did not enjoy our Volvo's at all. I (and I like most things automotive) just do not get the Vulva love at all.
I am not trying to take away from what you guys are into at all, I just am not a big fan.
ours was an overweight, underpowered pig that handled like an Ox cart. (x2 we had two of them both wagons, and both hideous)Leave a comment:

850 is really reliable actually. There are many reviews of ppl with well over 200k miles on them that really enjoy themLeave a comment:

Not really, I'm interested in Volvos in general right now. The S80 was just what what spiked my interest.
All in all these are some nice looking cars, I feel like they do have so much sleeper potential.
So what I'm hearing is stay away from the S80. From a little more googling looks the transmission really is made of glass. I'll be looking at early 90's late 80's cars then. Why do I always end up interested in cars from this era??
Now I want something that will cost a lot of money. Thanks guys
edit:
Anything to be said against the 850? I might be avoiding the 7xx because I really want to aim for something FWD, otherwise I'd just get a beater E30.Last edited by eskimo810; 02-07-2013, 04:01 PM.Leave a comment:

Stay away from the T6, go for the T5. Autos in S80's are made of glass as well.I would look for a nice T5 XC,V70-S70 or even an XC70.Some of mine...

heck yes.
I had a 1986 Volvo 740 turbo, with a delightfull GT35 turbo thrown on, funnest sleeper I ever owned. Surprised A-LOT of unsuspecting 5.0's and vtec kids.
b230ft engine (the later models 1990+) are swedish marvels.
next the any e30, the mid 80's volvos hold dear to my heart.

*edit* sorry, didn't actually READ the OP's post...so my post is essentially useless diatribe.
my bad.Leave a comment:

If volvo, then stick with fwd since its probably cheaper to buy and maintain. Volvo awd system is useless.Leave a comment:

Anybody Drive Volvos?
Yeah they seem pretty boring to me too.
However, I don't want to keep driving my E30 in the winter and if I were to buy another car just for winter and spring, it would have to FWD or AWD. Just from browsing Craigslist, Volvos seem pretty cheap for the mileage they have. I'm looking at something like a 1999-2000 S80 T6.
Has anybody ever owned a Volvo from this era? Are they worth pursuing or do they have an Audi-level of maintenance?Tags: None
