We've got a couple of them...don't have to worry about snow here (except for last Sat. while driving the 240 home...17s with BFG gforce sports = scary).



Definitely momentum cars that like to be driven smoothly.

Hmm..I talked a lot of shit about the ipd pegs, but they dont look half bad actually installed. i'd personally try em out with the old school black volvo-burger center caps

By the time GM was finished killing Saab all of their cars were rebadged restyled GM products with the exception of the Saabaru.

Ford influenced a tremendous shift in Volvo priorities, they are no longer a car that is designed to last an owner forever in comfort safety and simplicity with tank build quality. Just look at how terribly unreliable the S80 was the first of the fords. My aunt had one and dumped it in the first three years. My mom had an xc70 and they commonly had tranny failures at 100k, my moms failed despite perfect maintence. We sold both of those and continued owning our 20 year old 740 and 940. The s40 is a focus/mazda3 chassis that is now discontinued. The new xc60 is 700lbs nose heavy, the new BMW x3 is 17lbs tail heavy how is that for priorities of engineering excellence? The Ford now Chinese Volvo are just an also ran in the near luxury category.

I'm not being sarcastic, Ford never influenced any of their designs onto Volvo. Ask anyone who actually worked for Volvo (or Ford for that matter).

What made Volvo's shitty, well, we are all to blame for that actually.

After the great success of the 70's and 80's Volvo's, they were scorned for having out of date designs by the auto reviews. I mean look at their competitors like the Accord, or Camry, these cars were more reliable, fuel effiencent, and overall and more refined vehicle. The Volvo's with their RWD layout with the anemic NA 4 cyl B series engines were terribly (and still are) out of date, which is what caused Volvo to pull the plug on their old designs.

If you want proof of this, just look up any auto review (new) of a 740 or 240 etc. Volvo was in a class of it's own that nobody wanted to be a part of. Sure their designs worked before and proved very successful (reliable, easy to maintain etc.), but technology (and the competitive automotive marketplace) superceeded them.

The reson why so many of the afrementioned Volvos were terrible, was because they were Volvo's attempt at catching up to the rest of the marketplace. I recall the 850 when into'd in 93, actually won many awards as Volvo'd first attempt at a north american FWD car. It was great, but Volvo kept their premium linup (the V90 and S90, 960 etc.) all RWD. U;timatly, they had to make a FWD premium car, and sadly, that was the first generation of the S80 (though later versions were much better reviewed than the 99 versions).

What's wrong with Ford? they didnt' influence anything of Volvo's designs or decisions, all they did was provide them more funding to continue doing what they were already doing, just like GM and Saab.

If you must FWD stick with the pre ford/china era 99 or older. Heres a great example for a fair price.

I've learned to deal with using a RWD car in snow, but I would absolutely have to disagree with you. Unless Volvo specifically has really shitty FWD, FWD is so much better in snow than RWD. There is no contest. I've tried all manner of sandbags and studded tires, and all I remember is my dad's old Audi plowing through waist deep snow from a standstill.

If you must FWD stick with the pre ford/china era 99 or older. Heres a great example for a fair price.

A 140 (or 240) with any skinny tires will go through almost any depth of snow. It's all about pounds per square inch.
