Renault developed a cam-less valve system for their turbo V6 F1 motors back in the 80's.

This is not such a new technology, but good to see it applied to road going cars.

I was gonna say, I thought that was how the F1 engines worked for quite some time now.

I remember reading about solenoid activated valves on the Supercharged ecotec lsj years ago. They were talking about it on the Cobalt SS.

Not quite the same thing, but the same end result.

Wow i'm surprised car companies aren't already doing this, i'm sure they have thought of it before. There are so many huge improvements with this valve actuating design and on top of it all it's actually more simple than the camshaft based design it would replace. This is one of the biggest improvements to the internal combustion engine ever IMO, more significant than the change from 2 valves per cylinder to 4.

Developed in the 80's... Now days F1 uses compressed nitrogen in place of metal springs. Cam shafts are still used

I mean I haven't watched the video yet so I'll reserve this space as my "before" opinion

but what's the beef with hybrids? I think they're just a stepping stone to full electric, which delivers instant torque, and can be obtained without giving the middle east bajillions and ruining our economy (there was drama a few months ago about how if the middle east starting demanding oil payment in euros american economy would collapse).

I look forward to a time when full electric is the way. We can get that from hydroelectric, wind, etc. Domestically too. seems foolish to keep burning a non-renewable resource that pollutes like crazy, and giving another part of the world SO much money. and I see no advantage to it

Seriously awesome. He mentioned 20% more fuel efficient, with 30% more power and torque. Imagine an engine like an S54 with something like this...

Also, the air engine stuff would be incredible. Using off-throttle engine braking to compress air for your valvetrain, or being able to use it to provide additional manifold pressure like a forced-induction setup... would be just amazing.
