I recently purchased one late last year and I was thinking pretty much the same as you. Previously owned one 12 years ago, but never got to drive it. Just learned to work on cars with it and then it had to be sold...
After i was sick of driving a truck in LA I knew I wanted a reliable sports car that I could easily work on if needed. Plus it needed to be able to compete with the stature of LA standards.
I started researching cars and just realized how the E30 is the perfect car. The body lines alone are timeless and the power plant is essentially perfect. Not to mention all of the features that come with the IS version. Hands down the E30 BMW is the perfect car to buy if you are buying a used car and you love driving.
In my life time I have driven a lot of different cars, there is just nothing quite like driving in your own E30.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the body lines. It brings too many flashbacks to yuppiemobiles and Hong Kong transplants. And my car is a Zinno 4 dr, it doesn't get anymore stereotypical than that.

But I really like how simple the car is on the inside. Teutonic simpleness. Also, I like that the car is the right size. Modern cars are too long/wide/big. It's a good size, and also reminds me of my mom's Volvo 244 I rode in growing up.

I like that it's long production means there's a lot of them on the streets even today, and parts are relatively available.

Bought the car for my fiancee, but boy, I don't know now. Maybe she'll be willing to drive my 18RG swapped 75 Toyota Hilux Truck. :)

I've only recently made the change to the e30 after owning a few newer golfs. I had always loved the look of e30s and after the first time I drove one I was sold. With AC, power windows/sunroof etc it feels more modern than my golf that was 10 years newer, but unlike new cars it has a sence of character. The simplicity of everything makes it very easy to work on, and the reasonably powerful (I'll be it mines not exactly stock) engine in such a light, rwd car, with no traction control or any other modern aids makes it a real drivers car. Even in the wet when I know at any time the car is planning 5 different ways to kill me, it is exciting and I wouldn't have it any other way.

My e30 is 27 years old, yet doesn't have a single rattle, which really shows the quality. I find excuses to take my car out for a drive multiple times every day, simply can't get enough of it.

-For a DD, its all there...everything you need and nothing you dont.
-At least in my parts, I may see another e30 on the road maybe once a week. I lose count of how many e36, e46, e90, etc...
-For the most part, easy to work on.
                    -No car payments!

I can't believe how large the trunk is. It constantly surprises me how much fits in there.

Truth. I recently moved 330 miles and I could fit in everything I owned in the car including: CRT monitor, desktop computer, (2) 2ft^3 speaker enclosures, 2 home amplifiers, collapsible 12 cabinet and extra shelving unit, all my clothes, tool box and other tools, clothes, mini fridge, box of car parts, posters and food for a week. (ditched the mattress)

I still had a bunch of fun driving that full of shit car. e30 = much love/obsession.

the e30 isn't the fastest, best looking, loudest, quietest, or best equipped car. it's the best combination you can drive, for under $100,000
