I think the new Fords from Fiesta thru to the Fusion are great cars. I would seriously consider the Focus if I was buying new. I just wish they didn't feel so Ford inside the cabin.

If you want a new-new car that'll last long, get something Japanese.

If you want a 2000ish awesome car, get an E46. Anything past that is going to cost an arm and a leg to work on.

Rented a ford fiesta for a couple of weeks, seemed underpowered and was easily moved by wind on the highway. I like the focus, though. They seem pretty solid. I've also rented a fusion and that was very nice. Fairly spacious interior and was a smooth ride.

I understand the Euro bias, but there are many nice turn-on-and-go cars from the US, Japan and South Korea.

New focus is exactly what you'd get in europe(aside from Engine choices in Euorpe). Those cars can EASILY exceed anything from VW (GTI vs ST inclusive) in performance and quality/long-term reliability.

Looks like my mom found a 2012 Ford Focus with a manual gear box and low miles for about $12,500. She drove it yesterday and seams very happy with it. This also means my youngest brother will be learning how to drive stick as he just got his learners permit!

Good price. Was it a private owner or dealer? The girl has been looking for a used fiesta/focus wagon in that price range and haven't found anything yet, especially not in the 5 speed.

TL,DR. We bought 'ma a '13 Fiat Abarth, she loves it and it meets all criteria of a city car. Relatively good on gas too, depending on the weight of the driver's right foot.

I sell cars at a used car lot, and one of the cars that sell quick, and seem to have no problems, would me a mk4 gold TDI. Seen a few of them here, they sell quick! Same with just the regular golfs. Those are a little cheaper, but are a little worse on mpg. I myself, wouldn't mind having one. Awesome car with 40-50mpg. And it's pretty stylish too!

I'm not sure if this fits all of her requirements.
