Friend's GTO keyed in my posession...

I was having some work done on the e30 and decided to hit up one of my best friends to borrow his 2006 GTO to run some errands. In addition to him being my best friend, it was also my previous car before I sold it to him-so he doesn't mind me borrowing it whenever I want. I drove it to a local hardware store, shopped for about 20 minutes and came out to this...

(A quick shot with my iPhone. He has all the detailed photos.)

He isn't mad at me at all, but it's a fucked up situation. I asked if he knew anyone with a motive and he said "Shit with this car, I get flipped off about twice a day." I did take advantage and enjoy the power of the LS2, but didn't come into any encounters on my way there- I didn't get flipped off, didn't cut anyone off, etc. So either someone who didn't like my driving followed me or someone who had a previous vendetta against it/the owner took advantage of seeing it unguarded.

What pisses me off is why the guy didn't wait for me to come out and just confront me. Keying a car is beyond childish; I'm a big guy in stature- that can throw hands when needed (why I think he didn't confront me) but had we talked- it wouldn't have gotten to that point at all in the first place.

The security footage we got was a joke, he was wearing a hood, clearly a male but no facial details, and no footage of him getting in a car. Still filed a police report of course.

His insurance won't cover it (their argument is "how do we know you didn't key it?") ... Yeah he keyed his cherry garaged 2006 GTO with 22,000 miles for a new paint job...

Anyways, what are your feelings towards this? How would you handle it? Ever had your car keyed? I keep offering to pay for at least half since we don't know what the persons motive was, but he refuses to take my money. (Damage estimated at $1100)

I don't really see a cut and dry solution to this, just venting my unlucky day I suppose. Who the hell keys a car?!

I had my 1970 Dart keyed in highschool (1996). The cameras at school didn't catch anything, and my insurance covered it. All marks buffed out since the keying didn't break past the clear coat. As for your situation, some deal will just have to be made between you and your buddy.

I would bet it was random. Some people have the mentality to just key random nice cars... Pent up anger or jealousy I guess.

Do you have the guy actually keying the car in the video? If so then you could show it to them.

A random vandalist tends to be more careless and would not have worn a hoodie.

Someone keyed my e30 across the hood @ school a couple years ago.

I would have had a pretty nasty "PTSD moment" if I'd caught them in the act.

Never had my car keyed before, but some dumb kid broke my E46 window thinking i had some kind of valuables in there, my car was parked in our gated underground parking stall while this happened dumb guy took his time to get in some how and break my passenger side window he only got away with a pack of stogs and my Gucci cologne that was in the glove box at the time. Playing detective I started asking all the local and apartment kids if they knew who it could be and sure enough i got his name but not his address i wan't that mad at least i had insurance. 1 week later i go to Lucky's across the street from my Apts. and seen that scumbag and his face was totally scraped up and bloody looked like someone really beat him up good. What goes around come's around i guess Karma truly is a bi*tch.

Thats so odd that his insurance won't cover it. Don't they have to by law (if hes got comprehensive)? If they think insurance fraud is at play, then they need to investigate. But simply saying "how do we know you werent the one that did it" just doesnt sound right to me.

Comprehensive coverage covers the "act of god" type stuff including vandalism.

Your friend should keep fighting the insurance company....that makes no sense. I have gone back and had my insurance company re-appraise damage three times until they paid me for what it was worth, when the original damage value was less that $200 (the interior/paint of my wrx was pretty destroyed from a break-in), and came out with $1000 over my deductible of $500. They wont pay you if you dont make a big deal out of it, that is how they do business unfortunately. Keep pestering them because it WILL make a difference (and their argument is complete bullshit, apparently youre guilty until proven innocent?!). And if he was really gonna key the car himself why would he do it in a public place?

                          ^^^ I agree.

If your friend has "comprehensive" coverage under his insurance policy, then they should pay for the damage. Cripes - you have a security video as proof.

I keep a low deductible on my comprehensive coverage for these types of purposes (I've had three cars keyed). Add to that the suck a$$ roads around here that have me replacing on average one windshield a year and its a relative bargain.

Find your best local body shop and have them take a look. Someone that knows what they're doing can work wonders on that type of damage without having to respray the entire panel.
