          Looks like the same color,

I don't remember the missing grill. The was impounded in Mid Wilshire impound then sold to Pick you part. The car was originally imported thru Florida, still had the smileys, M systems wheels without the cover, and a pretty sick sound system in the trunk

Could very well be the same car!!

It is the same car! The story matches. I found it on a street, watched it for weeks and it finally got towed after being ticketed multiple times. I had a friend who was a cop at the time, had him run the plate, went to the owner's house, thinking I could buy the paperwork from him and get it out of impound. He told me he was a cinematographer who was away on an Australian shoot and didn't realize he parked in restricted parking. He told me he'd get the car out as soon as he had time. He also took me down to his garage and showed me his mint Le Mans Blue E39 M5 with ostrich interior, so he knew what he had, was an M5 guy.

He never got it out and I kept watching the auctions at S & J Mid-Wilshire Tow. Finally, maybe 7 months later, it came up for sale. I went down to the auction and bid on it. The LA OPG rule is cars that are valued at $4k and below are sold that day. Cars that are valued over $4k are "long lien" and the owner has 10 days to get it back out after the auction ends. Cars that are bid up over $4k become "long lien" and have to go through the whole auction system again at a later date.

I started bidding and some old guy in a dashiki got in a bidding war with me. Just me and him, went over $4k. So, it became a "long lien" and I had to wait months and months again. Finally, it came back for auction but, by this time, I had a new job and couldn't get the day off. I lost track of it until today :D!

Here is a link to my 2007 thread about it. There was a second thread with a follow-up but I can't find it. What happened to it? Any pics of it? The owner had all kinds of paperwork for it. From what I remember, the engine received a $10k service just before it was impounded.

Also, in the trunk there should have been Hella boxes containing OEM E39 M5 headlights and taillights. They were from his E39 and were likely stolen by the impound yard.

Its the same car, the car ended up at AA Foreign Pick a Part in Sun Valley, As I walked into the yard, they have a cars for sale on the way in and that car was one of them. I got the car for $5500.00 with a set of e39 hella headlights. Car was then given to a good friend of mine who is a Bmw nut and has a body shop. He had the whole car repainted to factory new, then he sold it to his service writer. Car is somewhere in the San Gabriel valley. Nice car, drove really nice
