    Quick Odometer Question

    Hey Guys,

So i had my car registered yesterday (the odometer is broken), and when the lady at the desk asked me for an odometer reading I said I about 178,000 and that it was not functioning properly. She said the car was currently titled at not actual mileage by the previous owner and that she had to use the same mileage that was already on the old title. Anyway, I look at the title later in the day and realize she put down 178k even, while the car's odometer reads 178,7xx. Now this will be flagged as an odometer discrepancy. Is there a way to get this fixed? Is it even worth it? I am located in NJ in case that makes a difference.

    Thanks
    -Alan

Probably will show up as a discrepancy. The only situation that will matter in is if you want to sell the car, just let the buyer know what happened.

The majority of people looking to buy a 200k+ mile E30 are going to be enthusiasts who know all about E30 odos, or young dumbasses who don't care about odo discrepancies.
    Different strokes for different folks.

I plan on swapping out the drivetrain too, in which case i suppose it also wont make much of a diff.

Most states exempt mileage on e30s at this point anyway because of age all of mine have been, and I wouldnt worry about it unless I had a real low mileage car I wanted to keep a record of miles on.

Odometer statements are a federal document and Im pretty sure there's a check box for vehicles over 10 years old that exempts you from declaring mileage

I wll call and ask if it can be corrected since it was a clerical error and only a couple of days ago. If not, I decided I am just gong to leave it alone, since the odometer is broken anyway and I plan on swapping in a new motor.

i know for a fact that CA DMV does not care about the mileage on cars over ten years old. i'm pretty sure my CA title doesn't even have a mileage listed on it. i would think most other states would be the same.

My title has the mileage listed, but you may be right it probably doesnt even matter at this point.

Before my ownership my car showed an accurate 120k in 2006 for a smog fail on dmv records. It also magically showed 248k three days later when it passed. Didn't get flagged as a discrepancy and the mileage was never checked again on record.
