    New 2nd car? GTi 16v?

So i have a '94 golf 8v that I use a fair amount, whenever the e30 needs work, to get better gas mileage, etc. The problem is, it is totally beat. The interior is shit, the body is twice as shit, it runs like crap. The list just goes on. On top of the regular usage, I dont want to take the e30 to richmond (VCU) because the roads are nasty and I havnt even found any good places to drive it there.

So down to the skinny, I'm thinking of trying to find a well sorted out 16v GTi just as fun, reliable transportation that i can leave on city streets. I will not consider another 8v, too damn slow. What do you think of the idea? What model years should i look for, work done, etc?

I'd go do some research on a VW site, like the vortex.

Are you planning on selling or parting the 8v?

preferably sell, i dont really have the space to part it and dont want to have to pay to have it hauled away. If your interested in buying it, all i can say is that it runs decently enough to drive around town or even on the highway. I would drive it on short highway trips, about 100 miles, definitely nowhere too remote though. With a new control arm, it would be good. Its got new shocks (2 years 15,000 aprox.) new tie rods (last summer).

If you want something to fill that task don't get a 16V GTI. When I lived in an apartment downtown across the street from the state capitol (read: crawling with cops), a guy that lived down the hall from me had a A2 GLI 16V which he parked out in the street. In the 6 months he lived there this car was stolen three times. The first two were just joy riders. When it was recovered from the third theft there was very little left of the car. He showed me pics of it after the cops found it. The thing was gutted inside and out. Get yourself something boring, slow, and reliable so it will remain in your possession while you're at VCU.

IIRC the lock design of the A2 chassis is shit and there a mod out there that makes breaking in a bit more difficult. I plan on living pretty close to campus (fan perhaps) and i havnt heard much of car thefts there.

My gf lives there now, thats how i know this stuff. I may just try to fix my car up a bit, but i also want something new, and like i said, i hate the 8v.

Anybody here no anything about body work? I was thinking of buying a stud welder and trying to pull a lot of the dings and get it resprayed.

Ive got nearly all the parts from a 91 8v GTI. perfect recaro red stripe interior if any of you are intrested.

As for a 16v Golf... Fun and fast, id like one also, but the 8v i speak of ruined vw's for me

I'm keeping my eye out for a car to pull and swap trannies with my mk3 *cough* automatic. I enjoy my jetta as a daily, but its only a matter of time before this tranny kicks the bucket (i abuse it enough as it is).

I'm just inquiring as its not a priority with school and all.. thanks

My paint gets the shit up here (baltimore), dings, people hitting the car, etc.... Probably not worth respraying, I'm not sure how much you've already invested in it. Those 8v blocks have been around for a long time and are pretty bulletproof.

I don't know which one you talking about... but if it's MKII then go for it. Nice, semi-reliable transportation, you could get a '93 &up hunduh hatch.. very close to vw's in fun part, much more reliable.

When I bought my e30 it was choice between that and an A2 1.8l 16v. I think that it is the best platform. It is light, and easily swappable to the 2.0l bottom end. I also like the look of the A2's better than the A3's. My previous sled had been an A1 GTi and B1 VW.

Get something more reliable. You will constantly be fixing any older vw.

Yea, im getting there with my car, always something not right. Been chasing vacuum leaks for a few years now. All the rubber hoses and shit are going to pieces. Im no mechanic, but i think the valve guides are worn. The valves clatter on start up when it hasnt been run for a day or so.

What else would you boys suggest for my needs?

Most of those 8valves (and mine) runs noisy on cold starts, especially with high mileage. If your not burning/losing oil, those hydraulic lifters are to blame, once the oil is flowing well usually they quiet down. I've learned thats just how they run.
