Asking for Subaru techs in an e30 forum is like asking the chess club how to pick up girls.

cool.. (btw I just asked here hoping somebody was a subaru tech but an e30 owner.. I dont wanna register on a subbie forum)
Anyway, I work at a private shop and we replaced a pcm in an 07 outback because the floor got wet and the pcm was shorted out. after installing the new pcm (from subaru) I can only communicate over the CAN bus by using the generic OBD function. this car has trans, instrument cluster, body control module, abs, pcm, and maybe a few others ... all on the CAN line.
THe module needs to be programmed and "paired" to the body module to make the car start.
I just wanted to speak to someone who works or worked at a dealer to see if they knew anything about how these modules protocols are set up..
Will a new pcm (subbie calls them EGI) not allow CAN bus communication through the whole system, with the exception of generic OBD, untill it has been programmed?
Subaru diagnostics use another line on the obd connector, pin 7.. which the dealer tool may use to get into all the other modules and reprogram/flash.
we use an Autel scanner and it wont talk to anything in the car besides obd generic. I know my CAN line is ok, since I can talk to obd generic.
also we tried a Snapon Solus and it was the same deal
thanks for forwarding this to your friend.. we are out of ideas over hereComment

Google Subaru Select Monitor, it's a Subaru specific protocol and tool used by the dealerships.cool.. (btw I just asked here hoping somebody was a subaru tech but an e30 owner.. I dont wanna register on a subbie forum)

That link might help with an open source tool to deal w SSM.
I'm not a tech but I remember a friend had an issue like this where he tried to pair a new ECU/PCM on his 06 Impreza to the anti theft immobilizer and this is something only the dealer could do with their SSM tools. That was a pre CANBUS car but sounds similar to your issue.
Hopefully you can find a way to pair it but I think it might be easier to get the dealer to do it with their tools.Comment
