    Might have to sell...

A few people have asked if I would be willing to sell my E30 to them and I've always told them "Not a chance!" until recently...

My BMW obsession began with one car...

Then I discovered E30's which were the best thing since sliced bread! But unfortunately my parents are not very happy with my E30 and since I'm just a kid I am sort of obligated to listen to them. My dad really wants me to get something a little newer. My particular E30 hasn't been extremely reliable to say the least and he is worried I will be putting to much money into it in the future. So unfortunately I might have to list my 1991 325i...

They would approve of the E46 touring though, especially since it's a bit more practical and most likely wouldn't have a 3" straight pipe that wakes the neighborhood.

Don't know what to do about this... The whole situation sucks big time, I really like my E30 but my parents are right about putting a lot of money into it. :(

Like your not gonna spend a good chunk on buying an e46 and also spend money to maintain that one? You'll be money ahead getting your current car sorted and reliable. Especially since it won't lose anymore value in depreciation.

Yep I know, my current E30 (well, engine...) seems to be nearing the end.

My parents do not support my choice of getting an E30, therefore I am paying every penny of gas, insurance, and parts I need plus the price of the car. Pretty tough when you are in high school. My name is even on the title which I am proud of. But if I were to get an E46 they would help with some stuff since it is safer, "more reliable" (I don't 100% agree there but I know they can be fairly reliable if taken care of, like E30's...), and a bit more reasonable.

My current E30 is my mothers worst nightmare because it has no ABS, no traction control, no airbags, its "old" so it's "less safe" (her thoughts on how things work), it's too loud, and too low. Not like I wouldn't lower my E46 if I got one.

Just tell them e30's don't loose value.

a 91 should have abs and airbag. did you removed it? i would throw the stock exhaust on, rise it a bit, hook up the abs and airbag. you're going to miss it if you get an e46, its nothing like an e30.
Bought parts from me before? leave your feedback here

I feel for you but, it sounds like your parents think you belong in a bubble buddy. All the things they're worried about are repairable for the most part.
Like mentioned earlier, maybe if you go back to almost stock form, it will appeal to them more?

No offence but your parents do not make any sense. I bet your dad has AAA. Not slamming but I have a few friends with parents JUST like this and I am coming close to 30. They think older cars are pure junk.
The tourings are awesome, but you will not save money getting one.

As you stated, you are paying for everything = zero say for non-paying parents. And they are dreaming if they think the e46 is more reliable/cheaper.

Tell your parents if they want you to have an e46 then they buy the car, pay insurance, and any repair bills because the car is too new for you to work on. The first time the car goes in to bmw they will beg for the e30 back. win?

A car is only as reliable as the owner. Meaning depends on how well you take care of it. If you don't then your car won't be reliable but if you maintain it it will always be good. You can just drop like 1-2k on new parts and it will be reliable and far cheaper than a newer BMW. I've had one of mine from 1999 and all I've done to it is oil changes and a batteries, 1 alternator. I just (after 13 years) replaced the timing belt, water pump & thermostat. So I'm pretty sure it's reliable, it's from 1980's Germany.
