I want to. I'm not afraid of it. The first e30 I drove from Boston was sketchy as all hell. It was a great drive. It's part of the adventure. The owner is really reluctant. He insists I tow it. He clearly wants the car to go to someone who will take care of it, not just anyold Craigslist douche based on our talk, so I don't want him to not sell it to me because of that.

I would drive it and just be prepared to tow it home from where ever it might brake down. Bring tools with you to fix anything that might go wrong. It could very well take twice as long as trailering it, but if everything goes smooth, it would be a lot cheaper/easier. Plus it would be an adventure!
Last time I looked Home depot charges like $80 for an hour. It's meant for people that need to bring large things home. (of you can have it delivered for about the same cost IIRC)
A friend's AAA card is ideal(mileage limit?). U-haul is your next best bet.
Or you could just locate your testicles, get in the car, and drive. ;)

Love the MG, reminds me of a 71 Volvo 1800 "wagon" I had... AnyWayS:
What I'm doing on the 22nd: Rented Nissan Frontier 4.0 from Hertz (must have class-4 hitch), Uhaul car hauler from MI to VA and return it to same Uhaul (which is MUCH cheaper than one-way rental) to pick-up my "new" 89 4dr... The Nissan is around $30x2 days and the trailer is about $120 total, factor in gas for a 1250 mile round trip is about $400.. . I knew long distance haulers back in the "dealer licence" days but non are answering their phones anymore...
Now this all because the car runs only with a jump and I don't have the time to dick with it, otherwise I would have drove it back...E28s are tough, make sure the oil and water is good and 3 hours is next door really...
I bought a '68 1600 bmw sight unseen from the back of the Roundel magazine for $600. I lived in GA and the car was in CA. It had been sitting unused in the woods for 3 years. A box of spares/tools and a one way ticket to Santa Cruz and drove it home solo. Without a cell phone.
Start looking for your testicles as mentioned above, a great story/life experience awaits you.
Yep, go fix the brakes, drive home.
Or surely you know somebody with a truck and somebody with a car hauler. Borrow that shits!

You're right. like I said, this guy seems to really care for the car. Hopefully he'll still sell it to me. I don't see why he'd turn down some cold, hard cash, though. This is all planned for Friday. I'll update the thread on how it goes.

the only thing that could make that story cooler is if you were a drunken ex con violating parole along the way by robbing gas stations
a couple members suggested using a tow dolly after removing the driveshaft. if that sounds like too much hassle, consider this- put the real wheels on the dolly. this method has been successful for me with several different cars including 2 different 2002's.
pm if you want more details.
The first E30 I bought had a roll of electrical tape for a CAB, ran on 5 cylinders, zero exhaust (not even the manifolds), and had only one functional caliper. Wasn't fun, but it made it home.
