    bmwscanner 1.4 ftw.

It's made owning an e46 a lot more fun. And less expensive. ANd I done learnt some stuf.

You do have the key in the 'run' postion when you're doing this, of course? Engine
    actually running is ok, too.

What super- sucks about the e46 vs. everything earlier is that the ETM, FSM, TLA and stuff
are no longer paper.... I say this because anything earlier, I'd go look and tell
you where power should be on the OBDII port. But I can't do that for the e46.
because I do not have the Russian- hacked software- only manuals.

the car itself is actually pretty nice, and does everything quite well. Maybe with less
character, but it does it well.

now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

I have this and it works perfectly with that software. For some reason, generic OBD-II scanner will not work on my car and is causing me to fail emissions.

ZHPmafia is probably the most mature and helpful forum out there if you own a BMW. I am a member on there as I used to own a ZHP. I will make a thread on there and link this thread to it. Maybe the guys there can help.

A guy on R3V is having problems getting an OBDII scanner connected to his E46. Maybe we have some inside knowledge here that can help him out here is the link. http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=294314 TIA

I would take it back to dealer and visually witness the dealer hooking up to obdii port. Have them show you. This will rule put you in the right direction.

Thanks brother! I really appreciate it, I'll keep tabs on that thread and hopefully will get some good info from there.

Well I would, if it didn't mean throwing away another $140 for diagnosing fees. Worst comes to worst, I will have to do that but right now, I really don't trust the dealer and they probably will not let me go into the mechanics area to watch them work. Although, if I bitch at them for their poor service last time, they may let me pass and watch them do it. Hopefully I won't have to though.

So did you replace your GM5 module that you were talking about in your first post?

Also, you may want to consider getting INPA running on a laptop, if you can. It's ridiculously helpful. I picked up a buggy E46 a few months ago, and I love the damn thing. I've put over 6500 miles on it since then.

I did, got a good working one from a used parts seller. Damn thing was fucking expensive!!
INPA? Never heard of it. I'll look into it. Definitely love the comfort and quality of the car, just a real pain in the ass when things are not working the way it should.

I got a stupid good deal on mine. It's high-mileage, but the body's in great shape and the motor doesn't burn any oil. I got a new job where I spend a lot more time on the highway, and the E46 is TONS better than the E30 at high speeds. Just doesn't give a shit.

INPA is a BMW Dealership diagnostic tool, you can buy it from some Chinese retailers. It's invaluable for working on an E46, IMO. You've just got to be good at getting Windows XP programs to run on Win7 or whatever you're using.

Hmm....I'm assuming that's the real deal diagnostic software for bmw's. I consider myself very computer savvy so compatibility issues shouldn't be a problem. Would it work with my current usb to OBD-II cable that I got with my BMWScanner?

Most likely. There's a ton of info spread across various BMW sites on getting it running with various combinations of software and hardware.

Well, I take back what I said about e46fanatics, reposted in the general e46 section and got some pretty good help. Just ordered an Autel AL519 OBD-II scanner so I can test at home. Hopefully this thing works with BMW's, it's got really good reviews and super cheap, just under $90.

The generic scanner at the emission place cant connect to it, but the BMW scanner can.. hmm

I dont believe the bmw scanner cable will work with INPA, but I am using a similar cable to this with PIN 7 and 8 Tied together.

INPA will at least give you an idea if it is communicating with the car correctly.

Hopefully your scanner will help :)
