NEW CA Smog LAW! Need OEM Cat

    Hey all,

Dont know if you all know this, especially for the CA people, but a law was just passed where you need to run the OEM cat on cars now. An aftermarket cat like Magnaflow, etc. wont work. This is important because the OEM ones are very hard to find and more expensive when new. Also, I think the dealer is the only place to get one.

My swapped e30 needs a cat and I tried to buy the "CA legal' magnaflow one. The guy said that his company can no longer sell those to CA and that I would have to find an OEM one.

He stated that he new a guy that neded a cat for his ferrari and had to spend 10k () for an OEM Ferrari cat.

Any bright ideas on where to get an OEM cat that will pas emissions?

Wow that's kinda bullshit, glad I don't live down there.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to find one around here that isn't in decent shape though.

OP: Where did you hear this? Source?

Aftermarket catalytic converters must be exempted from California's anti-tampering laws in order to be legally sold and installed in the state. If an aftermarket catalytic converter is shown to be durable and meets vehicle emission control requirements, it is granted an exemption Executive Order (EO) that allows it to be installed on specific emission controlled vehicles.

I called THMotorsports to order a CA Legal Magnaflow cat for 227 bucks. He said he cant sell it to m because of the new law. That is my only source, but he sounded like he knew what he was talking about.

Those Turner ones are probably my best bet. Looks like hell to ship though.

Just because some guy said it's a new law doesn't mean it's true.

It has been that way for awhile now I believe, you just need to get the ca smog legal one. Go to your local muffler shop and they should have one for you around $240 out the door.
