    87 325 ? i or e?

came across quite a few bmw's that were just listed as '325'

Is this known as the Super eta?

Super eta was only for the 1988 model year. If this is really a 1987, you'll need to do some detective work to determine whether its an "e" or an "i".

Standard visible differences were the 4500 rpm red line and single exhaust on the eta versus the higher red line and dual exhaust of the "i" ... but after 26 years stuff gets swapped around so don't rely on looks alone.

    1987 325i Convertible - Triple Black
    1989 325iX Coupe - Diamondschwarz / Black Comfort
    1990 325iX Coupe - Sterling Silver / Grey Sport

    1981 Fiat 124 Spider 2000 - Green / Tan
    1998 Volvo V70 GLT - White / Tan

there was a model that was actually lower then the 325e called just 325. though all it is, is a bare bones eta. giveaways with that is usually the 6 button obc, crank sunroof, and there are a couple little differences between them. as far as the I and the is differences that are quite a few. the IS was a better optioned car. im pretty sure they were all coupes, they came with lsd, sport seats, the is exterior spoilers, sport steering wheel. Im sure there are more differences but those were the first to come to mind for me.

I had him send me a picture of the tach/speedo and redlines at 4500-5k

            ..Not an i? :(

              It's just a 325. Not "i" nor "e".

Looks like a base model 325 with ETA engine (not super ETA). Low RPM tach and single exhaust is indicative of this as well.

this car is basically a 318i with an eta. Its not a 325e, but it does have an eta, just no sport seats or power sunroof, 3 spoke steering wheel. etc, like the 1984.5-1985 325e coupes.

I'm pretty sure that all of the i's came badged as i's. All cars that just said "325" out of the factory had the ETA engine except for the '88 cars which had the SETA.

The 318i was discontinued in 86 so they offered a bare bones 325 as a replacement entry model.

An "e" model will have a cold start valve. I/IS will not, Easy way to tell
