M42 is a worthless motor. No power at all, hilarious lack of torque... drives like an M3? please. At least when I get an S14 above 4000rpm it does something.

M42 is great at one thing, being a boat anchor.

your place better than mine, my place humidity around 90% all year
during summer season, you will not survive if you do maintenance or mod at outdoor
is that link same spec with mishimoto e36m3?
An ideal upgrade for the brittle stock BMW radiator, the Mishimoto E30/E36 Performance Aluminum Radiator provides your vehicle with enhanced reliability and improved cooling efficiency. BMWs are known to have frequent cooling-related failures due to the use of numerous plastic components throughout the system. A simple coolant leak can result in overheating, accelerated engine wear, or head gasket failure. Whether you have a daily-driven E36 M3 or an M20 spinning a large turbocharger, this E30 and E36 radiator provides ideal temperatures on and off the track. Most people overlook the importance of installing an upgraded radiator in their vehicle. Along with providing increased coolant capacity, this BMW radiator improves heat dissipation, which is beneficial for both stock and modified applications. The Mishimoto E30/E36 Performance Aluminum Radiator is manufactured using durable aircraft-quality aluminum end tanks, precision TIG-welded to an efficient brazed aluminum core. The inlet and outlets provide precise leak-free connections, and all factory overflow and temperature sensor ports are present on the Mishimoto E30 and E36 radiator for use with stock sensors and hoses. This BMW radiator also includes a M12 x 1.5 Magnetic Oil Drain Plug with Dowty seal, which effectively removes metal fragments circulating in the cooling system. The Mishimoto BMW Performance Aluminum Radiator incorporates mounting points for the factory external automatic transmission cooler, and it is a direct bolt-on fit for all 6-cylinder E30/E36 models from 1988 to 1991. As with all our BMW parts, this aluminum BMW radiator includes the Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty, ensuring superior product quality and craftsmanship.

Will be swapping mine this fall. Will report with disappointment or joy. Although I'm guessing I'll be happy with it. The M42 is a cool high strung engine but I've grown tired of ringing it's neck out to get onto the highway at a reasonable pace.

Even the e28 has more capacity. The key is a good electric fan that pushes
    allot of cfm.

I'm in same as OP's situation..
will it swap to m42b21 or m52b28 for DD
Huge influence in my place are hot tropical temperature and terrible traffic jam..
stop and go is PITA for the motor

My friend have e30 with m52b31
he is struggling to solve overheating, and for sure with AC

M42B21 more simple but will it worth compare I6?
88mm diesel crank costly, but no overheat issue

    terrible traffic
M5x will not survive from overheating

    highway traffic
M5x will survive from overheating, but it cant be on high rev for long time

It's obviously slower with that small of a gearing change. I can't imagine that 2.93, must be able to go like 50 in 1st...

I miss that 4.27 and will be rebuilding when I have time...
ive run 2.93s being an m42 for over two years. its not as bad as people think.

    I miss my supercharged M42.

    Does that count?

I had a 318iS, DD a 325e, have a 325iC. The e is an easier to drive car because I don't ever have to downshift on the freeway to climb a ridge. I do miss the high-strung nature of the M42 at times though, usually in tunnels.

so, an extra 25hp and 40ft-lbs of torque makes no difference? yeah right - you're being delusional.
Comparing to M20 cars - isn't it nearly +35hp? A buddy had a 325 for a short time while I was still rocking the M42. I seriously was wishing for the M20 after driving it, the feel was much much quicker (and my M42 was healthy).
