I've only had the tad I've seen from working with a buddy of mine on his '88 951. Great car, but you'll cry when it breaks.

"See, we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."

yeah, clutch job is very expensive. Considered by the open minded a better car than the 911, 86 and up has the better dash setup that is well worth finding.

A friend of mine had an 86... never had any problems with it. Super fun car to drive. I wouldn't exactly say that it qualifies me as having "experience" with one though ...

the handling is amazing, no other way to look at it. Yeah it might cost a bit more to fix, but its a porsche, what do you expect. Just make sure you get the turbo model so you can go fast in a straight line too. Friend of mine had the non turbo and it was pretty cool, but not half as good as the turbo

I've personally never owned one, but I've had a chance to ride in a few and talk to the owners....not to mention reading scores of info about them in mags and online. What makes the 951 appealing is that they've depreciated more than the 911s so they are more affordable to acquire. However, in the realm of parts and maintenance, it can be just as expensive as its air-cooled breatheren (if not more). One owner I talked to put it along these lines....."owning a 951 can be a real make or break situation. It really boils down to how well has the car been treated/maintained over its life." If you find a pricy example which is really clean and has documentation to validate its maintenance, it would be worth paying the premium since you know you would be getting a solid car. Find one for a 'hard-to-believe-that's-all-he's-asking' price and you may want to look elsewhere since its likely to haunt you with repairs and costs beyond what you envisioned. These are quick, great handling cars.....but they come with a price.

              Do your homework :-)

dad had a 944 (86), 86 951, and my previous roommate had like 2 951s and a couple of NAs over the course of 2 years. that I got to drive and work on.

great cars, if they run well. expensive as hell to maintain, working on them isnt too bad, but parts cost out the ass, and some of the mechanicals are just plain dumb. Unless you're very mechanically inclined, or like writing 4+ figure checks to mechanics, skip the 944.

You could say the exact same thing about the M5 and M3 as well.

like everyone has said I know quite a few people w/ them and they are awsome cars when they are working right...if they break...you break. I really like them and they are fun cars but if they break then you better know how to fix it yourself. Its your call...find a well kept one then..and only then get one.

Unless your out of college and have a real job and can really afford a car like a porsche, you might want to stay away. Ive driven a NA one and was impressed, but I wouldnt be able to fathom the repair costs. I dont remember the exact numbers my buddy told me but they seemed to be at least double anything I had done to my e30, even at the shop.

And Id take an e30 m3 over a 944 any day of the week. Same for the m5.

Speaking as a mechanic who worked on them I would not think twice about getting one. Great cars. There is soooooooo much stuff you can do to those cars. Get an 87-on for the larger brakes. If you got 5+g to spend on a sweet car I can't think of one that would beat it.
