I've seen mixed results here on R3V from those that have gone to the manuel tranny

I like both. An auto for just cruising, and a 5sp for ripping thru the gears. Plus when you have a GF who can't really drive a 5sp... An auto is just right for her to drive to meets and shows.

Have swapped BMW 3 autos to manuals now (2 x e21 + my current e30).

Still - I think an M30 powered e30 would be good with an auto and 4.10 diff! The HD clutch in mine is annoying in traffic, but my left leg muscles have beefed up accordingly.

I drove an M10 powered auto 318i once... slowest, most undesirable thing I've driven.

I love my manual E30, except when I'm trying to drink anything that isn't a water bottle or something with a screw top, because having my car pull to the left, holding my drink, and shifting all at the same time is quite a show. especially if you're the passenger.

Other than that automatics are only acceptable if you don't have one of two things or both.
    1. Dick
    2. Left leg

I kid I kid, traffic sucks tho for reeeeal...

Wow, a penis joke. Glad to see what's on your mind.

Mine's an auto. But I have a heavy clutched performance inspired cobra as a side car if I want to bang gears and go fast. The E30 is my daily. An hour of traffic every morning and afternoon as well as sipping on coffee in the mornings deters me from swapping to a manual anytime soon. Maybe down the road if the auto dies.

    Explained:
I used to be a car salesman at a Nissan dealership and I had to know this shit back and forth.

bought my first auto car ever, an auto e30. It's great not having to shift.

My vert sucked when it had an auto.
E30 is made to be driven on the edge of adhesion while accelerating through corners, and you just can't make that happen consistently with slush.

    Re CVT:
doesn't Nissan advertise its seamless shifting
The fact that there's no shifting on WOT is kind of cool really. It's like a power boat or airplane: just set max power and wait until you reach the right speed. Just don't close the throttle abruptly or there's a sort of elastic band effect.

It's while holding a constant speed or decelerating to a stop that the waffleswaffles thing sucks So Hard. With an infinite choice of ratios there's always a better one to be had. Makes it really hard to drive smoothly. At some magic speeds you can make it go boing-boing-boing down the road as it hunts for a ratio.

I got it a few weeks ago. Traded my 91 Sonoma for it. It's not very pretty to look at, but it's solid! And in this part of the country, that's an A+ in my book. I still have the Corvair and Firehawk. They're too fun to get rid of.

Yeah a friend of mine had a ford expedition that had a cvt and that thing was loud as all hell when pulling away from the lights and on on-ramps. Was a total pig on gas too..

There is no shifting. Think snowmobile. If you've ever ridden one...
