Its all about the location. Where I live, my 3900 Sq. Ft. house goes for about $375k. 10 miles away - same house, same builder, different school district - more congested area - $275k, maybe.

500k here can get you a nice sized house on a few acres if you are willing to live out a littleand aren;t worried about the public school district.

Where we have our place in FL - My KY house would go for about 650, and would actually be smaller because of no finished basement. Go to the coasts in FL (Not even thinking about South FL) and 500 wont even get you a 1BR condo without a view most places.

My area of Coastal NH 500k will get you a ranch across the street from the trailer park. My rents bought our house 18 years ago for 225k and itll go for almost a mil now just because it can be converted back into a 4 unit rental property. We currently take up the front two apartments and rent out the back 2 to pay the mortgage. In NH rentals are popular cause there is no income or sales tax, mostly just property. I keep telling my rents to sell while they can, but my Dad's will only move if hes dead.
