Noob question: When you spin a rod bearing, do you have to replace the rod as well or just the bearing?
From other engines I've seen with a spun rod bearing, the rod is usually okay, and the crank will need a cleaning up, or replacement if the damage is bad enough.

I'm a bit late on this but I have to agree with Chris, Adam, Ska, and even Charlie...

The engine can and can't be reliable. It just depends on the owner and the owner's pocket book size.

For example, my alpineweiss was cheap. The first thing I did was install an SBI oil pan baffle and checked the rod bearings. This is what all the owners should do when they buy an S14 motor because that is the number one problem with the engines. Then it comes to wether or not the previous owner took care of it...

We are running a 2.5L McHenry built motor which was quoted to be around 250-260crank... no problems and bloody flys around the local Florida tracks. :)

But there are some recommended things to go with when building a 2.5L.... I recommend searching on www.s14.net for some info..

        They need frequent oil changes
They need attentive owners who dont rev the piss out of them on a cold engine
They need preventative maitenance... not just reactionary maitenance.
Fuck yeah. And dont half ass it with a Turner Baffle. If youre gonna do it, het the VAC oil pan or just go dry sump. ALWAYS check your oil level. This engine is not for people who dont keep up on it. And if you mod it correctly and know HOW to wring it out, the engine should last fine.

P.S. The one thing that is ESSENTIAL whenever someones about to buy an E30 ///M3 is a baffle. If it doesnt already have one.

So in essence, if you can afford the maintenance on an e30 m3, and understand the character of the engine, it will be reliable. But, you will be performing maintenance more frequently, and therefore, it will have a relatively high running cost when compared to a regular e30. Wich is why i will never own one as long as i am 18 years old and my only source of income is carpentry.

"Having won more road races than any other model in history, the E30 M3 is considered by many to be the world's most successful road race car." - Simply put, E30s kick ass.
