    Leaking dif and rust

    Hey guys,

    I'm looking to buy a 89 325i coupe and noticed what I think is a slightly leaking rear dif and some moderate rust in the trunk over the rear driver side wheel well. Should I be very concerned about these two issues and what is ballpark range for repairs if I go to a 3rd party shop?

              Couldn't really tell, car was too low. But I saw a droplet on the bottom of the dif and a couple of drops of fluid on the ground after the car sat for about 25 min.

                      Usually the case. I had no visible rust on mine but when I pulled the carpet and the interior in the trunk i found a good amount of rust. A few drops every 25 min is a decent leak.

                          A couple bolts on the diff can be hard to loosen, but after that its not bad at all. Seals are cheap and I believe all of them are easy to fix.
                          Haven't you ever seen Russian Nesting Dolls? They work like that.

                              how difficult/time intensive is it to pull the carpet and trunk lining?

                              (I'm considering doing this before investing a decent amount of $ into my car)
                              If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

                                  Trunk lining is extremely easy, I've never done the carpet though.

                                          Run from it. From someone who purchased a car with "little rust" and found huge holes in his floorboards, run run run.

                                          It's much easier to find a clean example (even if it takes you a couple more weeks) than it is to cut and weld.
