School me on the 1998 Z3

My local junk yard buddy has been offerred a 98 Z3 that has been wrecked in the rear in trade for a $3000 truck that he has. He called me to see if I would have enough interest in any of the parts to justify getting the car.

I told him that I think some of the parts will swap onto my E30. All I know is that he said it is the "straight 6" motor. He doesn't know enough about BMWs to know the engine well enough.

What does this car have that I can salvage for my 1987 325i?

If the suspension is all there you can swap out the rear bits and then put in some E36 struts and go 5-lug. Bigger brakes, more beefy components, etc. If memory serves me correct, that 'straight 6' in there is all aluminum (block and head). I believe dropping this into an E30 will add little to no extra weight.....someone correct me if I'm mistaken. This engine is the M52B28 (2.8L) and its OBD II. You would have to swap out the harness and some other engine hardware in order to get this to work in an E30.

$3000 for the whole thing ain't bad. Do you know the mileage? Might be a good score on some nice parts if you're looking to start a project car.

Mileage is 31,000. The guy who has it now says it has a clear title and will run. He bought it for the front end body panels to fix up his own car. All the interior and mechanicals are still there.

its either going to be a 4 cyl or 6 cylinder, and the only 6 cyl that year was the 2.8. Great motor to swap im sure.

Sure there arent 2.3s in 98? I'm almost certain that was the first year for them.

If it's a 2.8, ask him how much he wants for the engine. Yes, I'm serious.

IF he decides to get the car I will make a list of everything it has.

I may claim the motor for myself since he's willing to take a computer in trade for the motor.

99 was the first model year for the 2.3(actualy a 2.5L) but the early 99s were built in 98.

98 model year engine options were 1.9, 2.8, and 3.2.

He doesn't know if it's a ///M Roadster. If it is the engine and tranny are mine. I may even go for the suspension & steering rack since my rack is dying a slow death.

                        Are the seats swapable?

Nice find. PM me as I need some Z3 specific parts.

If anyone wants an alumi block PM as I have one. All you need to do is is find a S52 block or S54 motor for a good price.

I like my m20, four lug hubs, and slow ass rack ratio just fine.

"Having won more road races than any other model in history, the E30 M3 is considered by many to be the world's most successful road race car." - Simply put, E30s kick ass.

I believe the seats can be adapted... you could also use the window swtiches I think...
