      My 5.0 E30 was a blast.

That said, I missed my m20 dearly. Kind of wish I had just done a turbo m20 now looking back. I didn't keep the car for long after the swap, it lost it's class.

Stupid power, but at the cost of the cars finesse.

Who swaps a 5.0 into an E30 and keeps it stock though? If I did one I'd be aiming for 350hp at the crank using some ~170cc aluminium heads, roller cam and a 4 barrel.

I love E30's but the fact is it's an 80's BMW they're pretty cool but I think the classy factor has kinda gone away with time unless you do a full restoration (IMO)

Thaaaaaank you... I wouldn't keep it stock looking to light those tires up like its the fourth of juuuly. The main reason for wanting to do the swap is for the lolz.

Sorry, his motor cost closer to $5k, the plan for the car is to be gutted, caged, and have a beefy high compression 5.0 for track/drift times. Anyone have a late model roller they're willing to sell?

Both choices will yield pure pleasure. If you go the 5.0 route, power can be made on the cheap. I used Ford Racing turbo swirl aluminum heads, edelbrock 2221 cam (520 lift), link bar lifters and a 750 holley on my build.
Here is an idling video shortly after my build. It's in a foxbody with all tubular suspension, pretty light and very fast.

What's the weight of that 5.0 VS the M20??
I went from S38->M20 turbo, because of the weight difference, and I'm doing it, because here in Denmark everybody is swapping M50 in their E30.
I'm Building a light weight E30, so the engine has to be light to, or else the balance of the car would be ruined.

From what I've read on forums like this; the 5.0 with alloy heads is the same weight as an M50(so, 20kg heavier than an M20?). Though, being 2 cylinders shorter, the weight distribution and handling should feel better than an M50, maybe even better than an M20.

Same if not lighter. all the iron blocks came stock with aluminum heads. you can pick them up cheap too. I got mine with 67k miles, all accessories, trans and full harness with ecu for $700.

If your going v8, mind as well go lsx. 5.0's are a waste unless you're going for a cheap thrill, lsx motors are lightweight and have more power stock than the 5.0 not to mention the massive aftermarket support for the lsx.
M20 turbo was my goal, but you'll inevitably reach the limits of an m20 rather quickly. Even though the power goals you are after are reasonable anything after 400 requires major work.

My car is a turbo m20, I think a domestic v8 would be a lot easier to drive as a drift car no doubt. Power wise not much different, it's just how that power is delivered.
