    Mitsubishi Eclipses?

I've been on the hunt for an economical Japanese car to replace my 318i since I'm sick of dealing with its issues. Been browsing a few Hondas and Toyotas but came across a base model 1998 Eclipse. It's a 5 speed (a requirement), 115,xxx miles, looks pretty clean, asking $2200.

Are these pretty reliable cars? For a long time I never gave them a second look because they were a favorite of the F&F knuckleheads, and DSM fans always seem a bit... different... but now they seem pretty cool again.

    You thoughts?

I think most people are going to tell you to sack up and fix your e30. ALL used cars are going to have problems, so keeping a car you already own and fixing what you already know is wrong is better than buying another car and finding out later there is stuff wrong with it.

If you want a (relatively) maintenance free car, get a loan and buy something new.

      Dude.

This is a bmw forum. Nobody gives a crap about an eclipse.

I am dealing with a 97 5spd eclipse NA vert. 110k and I am replacing the motor. This is the 2nd eclipse I have owned and both got motors. Both were/are ok cars. I also have an 05 civic sedan 5spd. The 5spd makes it fun to drive in context and far more reliable then the eclipse, easier to work on, better GM etc. yea Hondas are ricer, but I just kept it clean and simple.

Enjoy having to replace the crap motors every 60k? then go ahead, its like a rotatory engine except it inst as cool, and doesn't sound as good.

Base model is essentially the heavier dsm body, with the neon drivetrain.
              Bulletproof, yes.
              Fun, no.
              Good mpg?
              Not by today's standards.
All around that is a big NO. Just buy a neon. It's better.

If it were a 4g63t and you were going to keep it pretty much stock, yeah, no problem.
No crank walk on the revised 2n gen blocks from 98 up.
275 ftlbs torque and 235 - 250 whp and near 30 mpg freeway are fun, despite weight.

Don't waste your time and money on a non-turbo DSM.

As stated earlier in the thread, Man up and fix the car you already have. $2k in Maintanence is going to go an amazingly longer way than dropping $2k on another "project" car that will still need money to fix up.

On the actual topic itself, Mitsu's are pieces of garbage. I owned one and absolutely hated it after the first 2 weeks. Also, this should be your common knowledge, but mitsubishi isn't exactly the pinnacle of reliability. Let's just say its the ugly, red-headed, freckle face, head-gear braces, bug-eyed glasses, long nosed, small eared, buck-tooth stepchild of the Japanese manufacturers. Their Euro twin is Volkswagen and Audi, and we all know how amazing they are at reliability

Shoulda stuck to doing what they did best: TVs and Evos

                  EDIT: Wut is DSM?

I'd buy an 05 galant over the eclipse, because I have one of those which my wife drives. Only major service was a t-belt which I did. It has 130k on it. Has been in 4 major accidents and just goes. I hate it but she likes it and I can fix it. Paid off and only wants oil changes.

                      DSM= Diamond star motors

It was the joint venture between chrysler and mitsubishi to make the same car with different badges.

Mitsubishi eclipse, Eagle talon and Plymouth laser are all the same car mechanically, but with different trim and slight appearance differences. The plymouth laser was discounted after the 1st generation and was only available in FWD.

my ex had a 2000 model she bought new. it was crap. we sold it with around 100k. i had to fix some stupid thing on that car almost every week and we took good care of it. i think a prostate check from dr. banana fingers would be more fun. its a close call, but maybe even being gang raped by a prison inmate basket ball team would be better. i fucking hated that retarded car. it was a happy happy day when it sold.

DSM is basically a great drivetrain (same as Lancer Evo I-III) in an incredibly shitty car. Ergonomics are crap. Looks like a giant turd. Cheap ass plastic interior. Horrible.
