    rear window options

My rear window shattered unexpectedly this mornring on the way to work. Was cold, but I was not using the defrost, so not sure why. So I have 2 options:

    - get aftermarket glass / gasket for FREE through my auto insurance done in next 2 days

    - wait 2 weeks for OEM glass/gasket from Germany, and pay 200$ (insurance pays first 300$)

anyone have this experience? pros/cons of aftermarket vs OEM? Thanks

I'd go with the free glass. I have an aftermarket rear window and haven't had any issues with it.

I would get the original glass, if you want to save money try going to a pick and pull and look for some glass there.

i have after market glass for my windshield in both of my cars. its crappy quality glass that pits really easy, but for $80 a piece, why not just put in new glass every 3-4 years?

This. These glasses are easy to DIY install. Not like a used rear glass is going to be all pitted and shit.

Just take your multimeter and test the defrost grid before you pull it out.

Literally takes 1 minute to remove the rear glass at boneyard with 1 flathead screwdriver and 3 credit cards. Or you can be like me and use a drivers license, school ID, and a couple playing cards.

How nice is your car? If it's "kinda shitty" to "OK" I'd just go aftermarket.

If it's "pretty nice" to "Fucking awesome" I'd wait it out.

But mostly I second the used glass motion. Practice on one at P+P then put it in yourself. It's a lot easier than the front.

If you want cheap, take the insurance check and DIY. There is probably at least one R3v'er reasonably close that has rear glass. If not, try a junkyard. If the ins co pays $300, you'll make some cash.

I'd classify as "pretty nice", but I don't want to wait too long because the entire window is cracked into thousands of tiny pieces - It just hasn't fallen out . . . yet. It has a tint, and I think that may be holding it together! I actually wanted to replace the tint because someone did a fairly shitty job of trimming the tint around the 3rd brake light. I'm gonna go with the free aftermarket ins deal. They will also pay for re-tint so it doesn't look out of place. I'll get a crack pic and post here in a minute.

I don't have time to mess with replacement right now, and need to get it fixed asap - 2 kids ride in back daily. Otherwise I would prob go with OEM / pick-n-pull

Don't skimp on gaskets/seals. Get Genuine BMW. Always. You should demand that the insurance company pay for that, since that's (most likely) what's in it now.
