Steve, I do stay in touch with Chuck at Crenshaw. He drives that car everyday it is not raining. We took it to Vintage last year with my Colorado car. I am not sure what the service guys are doing to it. They always had odd questions for me.
Thoughts on salvage titles

Honestly, my take is that it's a comfort thing. If you want the car, don't plan on selling
it, the damage isn't structural, blah blah blah it doesn't matter.
The other side is, if you put a lot of money into making it almost perfect and then someone
rear- ends you, you're going to have hell getting paid back since it's an 'old salvage title junker'
to the insurance industry no matter what you've done to it.
Personally, I'm currently driving a salvage title junker, and it bugs me a bit. I don't take care
of it like I should, and it's a bit of low- level annoyance. I won't do it again.
Just my thoughts, since you asked...
tnow, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george gravesComment

new clutch, tore the motor down and did all new timing components and chains.. oil pump. I dont really get it that was such a nice car. Those guys dont know e10s. Nice guys though.Comment

personally i will not and have not bought a salvaged car. if someone hits you and your car is already salvaged, you will get boned by their insurance. the only way i would buy a salvage car is if it was going to be a track only car. but im also the kind of person to put 20k into my cars because, perfection or nothing is the only way.Comment

I agree. If you want a track car that you're willing to walk away from if it's wrecked, a salvage title is great. Otherwise you're going to have a hell of a time unloading it if it is for sale (because of the same reason you started this thread), and if it gets totaled on the road you might as well have a bottle of lube and anesthetic ready when you call the insurance company.

personally, the worst thing about buying a used car is the uncertainty of it's past. I got totally rooked buying a 2002 off ebay, which had unknown number of PO's. later, I found enough accident damage to total the car twice yet it still came with a clear title.
the Tii which is my user ID was purchased from the guy who bought it from the original owner. this plus the education I got from the junk car enabled me to score a nice, collectible car.
both my e30's were purchased form the original owners. and I overpaid for the privilege. these two cars are the ones I value most.
my point is that salvage title is only one factor in overall judgement of a car's history. the more you know about the history, the better off you'll be. IMO
it's interesting that sunroof/no sunroof desirability is flipped between '02's and e30'sComment

You guys have convinced me to find a clean title car. The fellow is asking $7K for the salvage car. It is less about the money and more about the quality of the car for me. Sounds like a perfect car in the ad but the carfax was awful. Keep me in mind if you come across anything. Conversions are okay too. Thanks!Comment

There was a great black e30 with e36 M3 engine on nceuro that I found a few days too late. Would love to find that one for sale again.I agree. I've seen 100's of cases where a "salvage titled" car was in better condition than a "clean title". Lots of times when a car is "Totaled" it goes to a dealer to get fixed properly. "Clean titled" cars can go thru a "minor" accident and get repaired by back yard barney, who ghetto rigs everything, yet the core support is junk buuut "clean title". Never the less a "salvaged title" car is worth about 3/4 the price to a 1/2 of a "clean title" and you have a hell of a time selling it. But that would not scare me I would take a bit better look of the body of said car, and do the normal checks of buying a used carComment
