Welp, the fucker made the claim. I called him back and he said he woulda gave me $1600 for the car, but would not have let me keep it. I'm pretty pissed off, I know this isn't my friend's fault in any way, but I'm probably gonna get shafted by the insurance company. Fuck I'm pretty mad right now.

You do know they won't total the car in a day, right? Also, I would ask to utilize their homeowners insurance as well, don't decide until you get what you want, they have insurance for this reason, and they are at fault, so you are in the drivers seat.

Guess what, you got backed into. You know who did it and YOU will make out on it. That is your car, they ruined it. Plain and simple, get someone(father, mother uncle etc) to be there with you for going over the logistics. Make sure they do not take you on it. Keep the car, get the money and do the repairs yourself. I did it for my brother, without involving a body shop. Works even better if you know someone with a shop. Have them write up something and do the repairs yourself. Just be legit about it, get what you need to repair the car and move on.

Well, he's a pretty wealthy dude and didn't wanna have that on his insurance. So say he buys my car for like 1600 and sells it for 800 easily with a clean title, that's not a huge hit for him. But he has decided not to give me any money. But I don't wanna be screwed over by his insurance. How can I force the company to give me the fair amount? It seems like these things are take it or leave it situations..

The car is still yours. If it's registered in your name, they can't come and physically take it. It's not theirs until you settle with them.

His insurance company isn't backing him, they are trying to fuck you. All insurance companies do this. Just wait out the claim, they will keep making offers until they can get it off their desk, you have to agree to the claim. Go get an estimate from a body shop, get an independent appraisal of the car, do your due diligence, don't get screwed.
