What is this thing?

So I picked up a 1984 320i and its had a couple after market parts put on it. I've figured most of them out, but there is this black tank on the driver side it has a red cap that says oil. The po only had the car for 4 months because he picked it up for a friend that backed out on the deal, there for he wasn't much use for knowledge on the car.He did say the guy he bought it from said that it was supposed to send oil to the cars engine when it was running hot or had low oil. I've never heard of anything like this and cant find any markings on it the guy neither of the po's knew if it was aftermarket or stock so I'm asking you.

oh dude thats a oil reservoir. factory from bmw im pretty sure. Pretty rare too i think.

Really? If it works, the first po cut the hose that feeds it to the engine so i wanna find a hose that can replace and see if it works hopefully it does cause i have no idea where i would get a pump for it. It also has VDO guages.

Only the second one I've ever seen, but yea, it's factory.

Sends oil to the sump when the oil level is low. Mikeedler is the one to speak to about this.

I do have one of those too. I haven't seen it working and mine is from an M10 e30. I pulled mine out of an E30 that came out of Italy and it wasn't all properly installed. From what I remember on mine, the oil goes in via the dipstick tube which also has a sensor. I think there was 4 wires on mine with a relay too, I will snap a pic of mine. I tried to install it in my M3 a few years ago, but it didn't fit correctly, had planned to try to install it in my daughters e21 on day.

I see you got my PM:) If you could get a pic that would be awesome I really want to get this thing working as far as i know it just needs the hose from the tank to the engine replaced and it should be working. I wonder what one of these things are worth in working order
