Nothing to contribute but I've always thought a locost/lotus 7 rep with an aluminium M52B28 or M54B30 would be pretty awesome.

Not an M54, but howabout an M10 running a single sideraft. Not sure how an M54 would fit.

Yeah, for an M52/M54 you'd probably have to extend the engine bay a little but that's the beauty of a locost. Build it how you want. They weigh what, around 550KG with a four cylinder? I'm guessing you could get it in under 650kg with an M52/M54.

I had one with a turbo'd 2 Liter air-cooled VW engine and tranny in it 8^)

I must ask for pictures! Did the 4x4 work?

I'm on the fence as I have too many projects already, and IDK if the trans/transfer case can hold all of 140hp, but it'd have to have functioning 4x4.

It was actually a kit car based on replacement M38 parts and a fabricated box frame. It worked out to be a really functional vehicle, I had long travel suspension and a bit more HP that made it functional over the stock kit that had like 2" of travel. I had done a lot of mods on it, I even had 911 disk brakes all the way around on it as well. 8^)

I painted mine up with red Imron polyurethane, I don't have many pics of it and they are on film somewhere... here are a couple of pics of the original brochure to get the idea

Crazy how 2 of the swaps are from South Africa. The S42 Exige (which I actually think I took those pics, about 5yr's ago), and the V10 Cobra.

I would punch a baby to get my hands on an S42.
