The only tools I bring to the junkyard are a sawzall and a hammer. It's all you need.

I gave up on junkyards a long time ago. Mainly because you spend way more in time than you save for some shitty unknown used part.

Id rather pay more and have a new part shipped to my door.

The "auto recycling" industry has got to be one of the most wasteful industries out there.

If I was rich and had the time I would like to set up some kind of huge salvage network. First of all I would try to keep as many worthy cars from being dismantled at all, but if that is impossible then I would like to support some way for a car to be properly dismantled, have all the useable parts cataloged and posted online. Of course this would require vast amounts of indoor space, but I think it could be done.

Unfortunately, as has been described in this thread and supported with my own experience, some people just complete assholes.

/\ bavarian auto recycling. All that effort does cost a premium. 90% of the fun is in the gamble.

I don't purposely break stuff, but i don't go out of my way avoid things at the yard. It's just not worth the effort.

I used to smash sealed beams with my breaker bar, but who the fuck buys those anyway?

Junkyards are a free for all, well at least upullit type places are. I don't go out of my way to break stuff but I will get to what I want in the most convienent way possible for me even if that means fucking up something else in the process. Time is money after all, that's why if you have the yard pull something for you they just torch it out destroying whatever they need to in the process. Sucks sometimes when good parts are ruined but who's to say somebody was even gonna buy it before the car gets crushed anyway, that's just how junkyards do.

this attitude is exactly why this thread was started in the first place. its karma man. if you fuck up something valuable on a car just because you don't have a use for it, sometime down the road, you are going to come across a part you desperately need only to find some other asshole like you fucked the shit out of it. time is money? sure. how much do you actually make an hour? this is just an excuse for being a lazy ass....

i am pretty sure i make a hell of a lot more than you do. i always take the time to not fuck up parts that others may use simply because it is ethical and the right thing to do.

cool. more for the rest of us.

here in houston, i have found many many amazing things. without the pick n pulls, there is no way i could have afforded some of the crazy stuff i have. for example, i have found countless lsd's in all sorts of ratios. i have found perhaps 6 sets of bilsteins for e30 and e36. a glass e30 sunroof. euro bumpers in good shape. a nardi classic woodline steering wheel. countless sport interiors that cost at most 200.00 with door panels. don't forget the almost new stainless b&b exhaust. (original price: $1000.00, my price: $60.00) the list goes on and on.

to me,going to the jy's is like being a kid waking up on christmas day. some days you hit the mother lode, others you get a lump of coal. its all a part of the ambiance and the fun.

This, no e30s in the yards in my neck of the woods :( I talked to some old guy restoring an '02 and he said he was practically tripping over e30s in the yards looking for '02 parts. When I pressed him which yards he went to he "couldn't remember". Fucker.

Exactly. If you just go to get little parts then you aren't of the same mindset. Going to junkyards, thrift stores, etc. is, for me, like a museum of modern history. Even if I don't see anything I need, there's still some interesting things to look at, and think about what they were when they were new, what the lives of those who used them were like, etc.

If I'm pulling 2-3 drivetrains per trip, the last thing on my mind is preserving an eta harness or anything else auxiliary that no one is going to buy
