Settled: Road debris totaled my 1988 325iS, how to proceed with insurance?

The car being modified, mainly that it is lowered, is against me too. Ground clearance is a factor, and hopefully something that doesnt place liability on me. No matter how high or low a vehicle is, Id venture to guess chances of a cable wrapping up a tire is the same. Clearance to avoid items in the lane while driving... now thats a different story.

I'll input my experience with comp vs. collision. I ran over a 2x4 on the freeway. My Insurance wanted to point it towards collision, with my running over an stationary object being considered collision. My statement that a car one lane over had, prior to me, run over it and kicked it into my lane and that I hit it while the object was MOVING, that re-classified it to comprehensive. For me, the deductible was lower, thats all. In any case, if the debris you ran over was still in motion from being dumped off the truck, that might be significant to the insurance coverage.

I had something similar happen recently. It takes a while to sink in and really hit you. Looks like you had a nice car there.

It really does take some time. I made the mistake of saying a few days before the accident to a friend that I was almost there, almost "done" with the never ending project. I was just at a spot where I had everything sorted and installed, where I wouldnt need every single weekend and minute after class to spend under the car putting on the new parts from that week (not that I didnt love that part also). Its just depressing to come so far and have it taken away, it feels like I took that last drive for granted.

But yes, just a car, and with all outcomes in mind, the car did its job and kept me safe. Ill feel better Tuesday when AAA comes out to discuss things, maybe Ill actually get some sleep Tuesday night from knowing that I can be made whole at least financially if nothing else.

Couple pictures I snapped today.
First is the e30 M3 strut housing that took most of the force of the accident, noted in the first post where the strut tower is torn from the body of the car. Also you can see where the barrel of the wheel is bent, still trying to figure that out. Its bent on both sides also. Im wondering if the bilstein sport strut in the housing could have reinforced things an prevented the housing from being ruined?



Next is the control arm, notice its bent. Hard to see at the angle, but the car is on the ground up front so its hard to reach in and snap a photo blind. Lots of force to do all that damage.

I cannot believe some people can live with themselves after things like that, Im sorry to hear thats how it ened up for you and your e30... the only way to make losing your car feel even worse. I cant imagine how you must have felt, and you had more $$ invested than I do in my e30. Thats depressing

Yup. Some people are just spineless c u n t s that don't deserve to live. Live and learn I guess. I have another shell in storage that is getting everything off my red car, but it still sucks.

Hope you find a suitable replacement shell and get back on the road...and if you don't (in typical r3v fashion), dibs on MT2 kit ;)

I was wondering if that was a fairly common failure point also? Right at the b-pillar to the corner of the sun roof. I cant figure out how force is translated to that point of all places.

I know these old cars are a far cry from modern collision standards, but that sure doesn't inspire any confidence.

I think it is relatively common. There was a white e30 on here a while back that was hit in the front and didn't look bad until you saw the roof buckled in that spot.

also, Bill Caswell's M3 is a pretty extreme example
