Subaru is more Lego than bmw.
If one cannot figure out how to get cheal parts for a saab 92 one is not capable of owning an e28

e46 Xi's seem to have less problems then E90 Xi's WHich are always Shitting out X-Drive Actuators and Transfer Cases.
E46s can get really costly in the maintenance Department if your not doing it yourself. At a certain mileage (120-160k) the whole Cooling System Explodes, Shocks(Rears suck to do in the wagon and if you get an Xi the only ones available are from the dealer $350 each), Fuel Pumps, axles Etc etc. Still would much rather have an E46 330XI over any Subaru. Thats also the opinion your gonna get at R3v because we're all BMW Biased.
Maybe look into a Passat 4Motion Wagon, WITHOUT Climatronic? Actually no Just get a Subaru at that point.
The Newer Rav4's feel like Tall Corollas. My grandparents have a 2012 and I actually dont mind it. Probably worth looking into.
Dont get a Jeep , thatll forever be broken.1985 325e M50TU(Sold)

XI shocks (sedan and wagon) 24-024532 Bilstein HD ~$200 each (retail on worldpac) without shopping around.
XIs like to eat starters, at least the 1st starter. Pain in the dick to do with the front driveshaft.
DIYing the e46 cooling system isn't bad. It's not like it has a $500 electric waterpump (e9x) that shits the bed routinely. Shit, I ran my original water pump to 140k before replacing it just for peace of mind because my GF started DDing the car 110+ miles a day. Still on original expansion tank, hoses, and radiator.
Oil leaks aren't bad either. Oil stand gasket, do the CCV system and vanos hose with it. Valve cover gasket (20-30 mins with the late style coils), and do the cam position and vanos solenoid o-rings with it.
Dual vanos rebuild is easier than single on the M50/2.
DISA valve is $$$$ but there is a repair kit for those at around $90.
Window regulators are cake too, and they're coming up with repair kits so you don't have to replace the entire thing.
Rear springs break off the bottom coil or two. They run about $180 EACH from the dealer, and should be done in pairs. I just slapped some H&Rs on all four corners and called it done for about $210.
Stay away from 99-02 e46s and you'll be good. Also autos if you can help it, but GL finding a manual XI wagon, especially a 330. I'm not a fan of the 325, but they're alright.
Or say fuck it I want real pain and cheap *introductory price and get an old Range Rover.

In my experience Subaru is the most high maintenance of all the Japanese cars. Several years notorious for head gasket failures, catalytic converters failing, never ending P0420 code
That being said we have a 325xi and it also loves maintenance. Front axle boots, crank case ventilation valve kit, all the typical cooling system items. At the end of the day assume both will require maintenance but which will you enjoy more. The BMW of course!

I had a 99 impreza outback this whole winter as my beater dd and this is the first year i havent driven a bmw in the snow and i must say i love me some subaru's in the snow. My impreza had blizzaks all around and it would go anywhere , i got ran off the road twice and literally drove out of snow covered deep ditches. Then i sold it for a newer 05 legacy gt, being as i have to drive long distances for my new job and it isnt half as good as the 99 was in the snow. Power wise its okay but nothing to write home about.
the outbacks are great, wouldnt say a bad thing about them other than i really dont get good MPG (22mpg on the highway)

My friend has bought three 99-03 range rovers in the past year or so. He rolled one, one set on fire and hes still driving the third. He never paid more than $1500. I think fuel mileage is the issue there though. Hes getting like 12 around town.
Just swap in a M5x and you gain like 10 more MPG. ;)1974.5 Jensen Healey : 2003 330i/5
