Diesels are not worth the cost or headache unless you need to pull a ton of weight none of them are trouble free the cummins is probably the best but it comes in a Dodge

We have work trucks with 5.3 & 6.0's with over 250k and we haven't done hardly anything to them. We also have duramax trucks and they are way more upkeep

The ford is a fine truck but the 5.4 will leave a lot to be desired compared to the 6.0 a 3 valve ford v10 would be a good choice as well

I would get a Chevy, personally. Gas smallblock, 4x4. If anything DOES happen it will be cheap but I have had good luck with my two old full size/small block vehicles.

For a gasser I would take the chevy over the mod motor any day. I drive a f350 diesel but would never touch the gas version. The ls based motor is a way better option for a truck this size.

Either are better than a Dodge. Father-in-law had a Sierra, I didn't like it that much, neither did he. Friend's father has been working in construction, hauling trailers and equipment with Super Duties for 10 years now and they've always been great. He's only owned gassers, too. Good thing is that the years you're looking still have a proper rear diff instead of the newer ones with the clutches.

If it was me, I'd go with the Ford. Good luck.

Price no object, I would take a 6-speed manual Cummins Dodge. I dont like Dodge trucks but this combo would make me choose it over Chevy or Ford. Gas smallblock GM truck is still my favorite for realistic purchase prices.

Would you consider the old Toyota T100/1st-gen Tundra? These may have rust issues but work a look I'd say.
