Black or Sliver? - How to pick an e30 color....

    .
    .
    .

Ok - I'm ready to buy an e30. I've been looking for a black e30 for a little while now mainly cause of this picture here

I just really love the contrast beween the wheels and the paint.

But it seems a bit hard to find a clean black e30...I've never owned a black car, but it seems to really show any flaws in the paint.

My other choice is sliver...most likely lachssilber.

    QUESTIONS:

1- Is black really that much of a pain in the ass?
2- Should I hold out and wait for a clean black e30 to come along?
3- Who owns the car in the picture?

    Thanks!

don't know who ownes it and i've never owned a black car before. From what i've heard they just take more care to make the paint look perfect. Black shows dirt/chips/swirl marks very easily.

I have a black car, and I havent spent much time with it. And it show alot of stuff.
Almost all dust shows, scratches, and stuff like that.
My brothers car, the silver one, looks cleaner alot more or the time.

Well, given that I do more or less all of the detailing on tara's car...

Diamantschwartz is at an advantage over, say, Jet Black, as it is metallic, and therefore hides light dust easier. However, a California Duster will be your friend for sure.

Make sure you keep up on paint care. Here in ID, we have at least 15 days per summer over 100*F, and after a while that starts to wear and tear on black paint. With the proper care, you can keep the oxidation/cracking to a minimum.

Lastly, chips will show. They will absolutely show. You will want to buy a paint pen and follow the steps in my paint chip writeup to repair any chips as soon as you get them. The most common way a black car goes bad is when the front of the hood and bumper get so sandblasted they appear grey. And in the writeup, I just happened to use a diamantschwartz car :-)

As far as finding one with good paint, absolutely. Remember what I said about wear and tear on black. If it's bad, it will get worse; if it's "OK" it will get bad, but if it's good, you can take a lot more precautionary measures to keep it that way.

That said, this is dead on with Lachssilber as my favorite E30 color. It really varies from day to day, but if my car were either color I'd be damn happy.
My mountains are better than yours.

Living in the Sacramento Valley, black cars (or dark cars in general) suck to keep clean. Personally I would suggest silver or even white. From what I've seen red cars seem to have a slight problem with paint fading (especially on the mirrors and rear spoiler). As for the other colors, if you are looking for some drop dead colors, lagoon green metallic, royal blue metallic and calypso red metallic just rock.

Ok first my Lachssilber car ... awesome, awesome color, it suits the e30 really well. My car was really east to clean, and keep that way ... even when it was dirty, ppl would still comment on how clean it looked, there were never any swirl marks at all i nthe paint, and even the chips didnt show up too bad.

Now, the D-Schwartz car ... yes, black really is that bad ... 5 mins after i wash it, it is covered in a visible film of gold/brown dust ... any lttle nicks/stone chips show up instantly, cos they contrast the black paint ... when it is clean though, it looks awesome!!! its just that is gets dirty quicker and is frustrating ... being Metallic, the D-Schwartz isnt as bad as straight black ...my friends jet black car is horrid ... esp when it comes to swirl marks ... you have to put more effort into detailing, thas for sure.

              HTH, jake

EDIT: lol, justr realised i repeated what the others already sed! ha

the black on your 330 always looks dirty. We can drive through mud and park my car next to it and my car looks clean compared to it.
                Im now E30less.

I own a black 325i and unlike my white one, which takes 1 week to get dirty, the black one gets dirty in 2-3 days.

But I mean, if you are willing to put in the extra effort, then you should really go with the color you want.

Hmmm...that does give me something to think about.

Well I've ordered Jordans e30 Picture CD - maby that will help me descide. I think if I can find a good look for a car in Lachssilber I think I'll go for that.

Hey wasn't this car actually resprayed????

...Urrrr, I think after I pick a color and get the car I'll be fine...It's just a huge descision.

I love my color. Its hard for it to look really dirty, and swirl marks don't really show at all. If I was buying another e30 it would without question ber lachssilber.
