100%! My dad taught me without any words. Just different levels of you go son to I'm getting disappointing through body and face language lol. What a motivator.

My dad's form of motivation was letting me learn on his 67 Mustang. Needless to say I was pretty eager to learn.

I've only gone out once last week, and once like 3 years ago. I can shift fine on a dirtbike or motorcycle, I picked that up in an afternoon.

If you can ride a bike, it shouldn't take very long at all to pick it up. Just have a little confidence in yourself and you'll do fine.

Just like a bike, point of where the clutch starts to grab, little gas to keep it running, and you're off! Clutch in right before you come to a stop.

Take your friend with the stick car to test drive the car. If it all checks out buy it and have him teach you on that.

Shifting is easy dude, just buy the car and teach yourself. All you need to worry about is getting out of first on a steep hill, especially if someone is stopped right behind your bumper. That one was always fun when I was learning five speed.

I learned on in an 90s F-150 driving in an orange field in buttfuck nowhere when I was 15. Later in life I hope to pick up a Lightning to relive that learning experience. Always some nostalgia with the car you learned manual in.

I wasn't expecting to learn on someone's E30, I figured that someone on the forum would be better than craigslist and know what they are doing.

I did finally find one driving school that teaches manual, but it costs $150 for 2 hrs. Might give that a shot.

You'll be wondering why you made such a big deal of it after 2 red lights and a stop sign. Stalls will happen and that's perfectly OK.

Two days later you'll find yourself matching revs as you drop two gears, matting it and passing that powder-blue Camry.

The e30 is probably one of the easiest cars to learn manual on. If you start with a flat road and just let the clutch out slowly (don't give it gas) it will engage and not stall out.

This will help you get the feel for the clutch engagement point. Do that a few dozen times, then start giving it a little gas at the engagement point. After that, you're golden.

I was in the same position a couple months ago. I decided to buy the car sight unseen because it seemed like a great deal. $1100 later (head gasket among other little things) I have a running manual e30 and I'm learning how to drive it. Best decision ever.

Weather permitting I am going to see an 86 325e tmr. It has been sitting for 6 months but there is no rust and owner has done some work on it. Hopefully it starts and I can figure out how to drive it back 3 hrs...

just so you know. no rust usually means "rust in the batery tray and jack tray area do to leaks but they wont ever check" so check!

I haven't been able to go see it since the weather was real bad last weekend. I did find the restore thread on the forum however.

Owner replaced timing belt, water pump, power steering hoses and reservoir, thermostat, front control arms, bushings and ball joints, master/slave cylinder, muffler, rear brake pads, and changed interior carpet/seats. No rust in pics under carpet/trunk or visible on body. Paint is shot and clear coat is worn.
