I don't know how many times I've seen this, but it's still too often to be acceptable. When I was at a reputable independent BMW shop about a month ago, some kid pulls in with an early E36 325i with an M3 badge. His car was leaking coolant. Ugly 15" or 16" rims (can't remember). I look inside, regular seats, automatic transmission. WTF?! Who are you trying to fool? I've also seen a couple early E30s (alum bumpers and all) with M3 badges.
How about two separate E34s with M5 badges on them. I've seen an E28 as well. All had slushbox trannies. None had M5 wheels. Again, WTF?!
Why do people do this? What's more, why do people do this on their very regular, very unmodified BMWs? With automatic transmission? That's just stupid. If you modify your car heavily, put in a nice suspension, do some engine mods, and feel your car is up to par with its M counterpart, it's still lame to do it, but at least I understand where you're coming from. Maybe you can add an ///M badge somewhere to say it's "M-technic" or something like that, but still don't pretend it's an M3 or M5 because it ain't.
