E46 M3 EWS question..

    E46 M3 EWS question..

    So out of no where my M3 will not start.. a friend of mine came by and hooked up his scanner..these are the codes that came back...anyone know if I need to just re calibrate the EWS to the DME or do I need a new EWS module..thanks

    sounds like the EWS module and DME aren't talking. if they were just out of synch it would be an ISN error. possibly need a new EWS module. but that means you also need a "new" DME..

    contrary to what BMW says, it's possible to blank out the ISN region on the DME and synch it to another EWS unit. I think you also have to synch up keys too. But the simplest thing might be to just delete it, it's not that secure anyway.

      I was thinking for sure a new EWS module, wasn't aware that I would need a new DME..a friend is coming by this afternoon to try and re calibrate the EWS to the DME, if that doesn't work, I will order a new EWS module and go from there..why the new DME though if is a bad EWS module? btw Thank for reply nando..

        because the ISN of the EWS module gets written to the DME, and you can only do that "once". If you get a different EWS module, it has a different ISN table, and you won't be able to write it to the DME again.

          No way to bypass this? Thought I could get away with a new EWS module and programming it to the existing DME..fuuukk.. DMEs are not cheap

            i thought the DME had the isn number not the EWS... so just programing the EWS to the DME would suffice..or do they both have the same isn number?

              no. they both have an ISN table. when you change the EWS module, you have to copy the ISN table from your new EWS module to the DME. But the DME's memory is an EPROM and it's in an area that you can't erase over OBD. So BMW requires you get a "new" DME which really just has the ISN zone blanked out.

              I can erase that area via BDM but you'd have to send the DME to me, and you still have to deal with the EWS module and adding your keys, etc. I have lots of EWS modules too.

              the easier way is to just turn off EWS. does the car crank?

                the car does not crank or turnover.. it doesn't do anything, but it has power and i can hear the SMG pump turn on too..so my guess after the codes came up was that I have a bad EWS module...can I delete the ews now at this point and start the car or is it not as simple as that? thanks again for your help

                  yeah if it doesn't even crank then the EWS module is probably bad or there's a broken wire somewhere.

                  you still need an EWS module to activate the starter, unless you want to rewire the car. the DME will work without EWS being synched (with EWS turned off), or you could re-synch the whole thing and have a working system. but the DME has to be sent out for that.

                    At work we have replaced a few EWS modules over the years without replacing the DME. The new (from BMW) EWS needed to be coded with the ISTA/P, and the cars start right up.

                      do they now copy the ISN from the DME to the EWS module instead of the other way around? because I know for a fact you can't write to that area of the memory without BDM. :)

                        This is what the dealer is telling me...All I need is the EWS module..No need to get a DME..also when I talked to the parts guy, he said the EWS module has been updated a few times, so maybe that had something to do with not needing another DME..but I wonder how much they are going to charge to program it..
