e30 in College?

At least in my case it kinda sucks because I blow through tires pretty quickly, I can't get in some parking lots because of the lows and my right rear rubs if I have more than 1 other person in the car.

Could I fix all of that and have a more practical car? Sure. But, I'm dumb.

All depends on if you get an e30 from a known member that took care of it, or picked it up from someone on CL that listed it with a V6. Boils down to a few things:

1. How much do you have to spend?

2. Are you willing to learn how to work on cars? if not see #3 and refer back to #1.

3. If not how much are you willing to spend on repairs?

1. I'm thinking 4-5k up front, hopefully closer to 4k so I have extra for any immediate maintenance it might need

2. I'm used to working on the miata, but how does that compare with the work an e30 will need? (NA Miata)

Between the rust/rot, numerous ground issues and the god awful Carter 2bbl some PO slapped on at some point, an e30 will be a piece of cake :)

Still miss that car, might've actually had money to do a proper restoration on it now

I'm a sophomore right now, bought mine last year. Had a 6 month co-op an hour away from my house this year and it gets me there and back every day...even when its 5 degrees out. M42 saved me a lot on gas too. Now Im going back to so its becoming a project. Sucks being on a college budget though. Don't have enough money for tools and parts so its going to be slow.

Like it was stated above 5k should get you a hella solid car. Especially if you go for an eta. I got mine for 2k and I've done 500 in repairs over one year. New 02 sensor and driveshaft guibo. These cars are tanks, also another thing to consider is that an e30 will appreciate, a Honda will collect rust.

You think so? Seems like the prices are pretty high right now, a lot higher than when I was looking a little under a year ago anyway

I had E30s all thru my college years. granted i had a good job and could afford the upkeep. Id suggest a late 318i. I had one torwards the end of my college years and the New owner has been using it throughout his college years.

Its an old car. itll need more attention then a Honda, that goes without saying.

So for you, it was a little pricey to own?
I'd love to hear about some good jobs/ side jobs to keep my wallet a little fuller through college, I should make another thread about that ;D
