    Thoughts on this e46?

Once again, thinkin about downsizing my e30 collection to get something that for once has less than 200k miles and doesn't need body work or any kind of work. Found this:

Obviously not a fast car but it checks all the required boxes. Just don't know if I want to pay that much...

    323 early model e46
it has the smallest engine available in the US
those cars have rear subframe issues
would not buy without proof of repair
    cooling system will need overhaul
personally wouldnt pay over 5k for that

Smallest engine is the most reliable of the e46.

All e46's need a new cooling system like all Rx7 need a new engine.

I'd buy a face lift model 325i Sedan manual (i did)

I sold my 2001 330ci with 110k that was equally clean for $7k like 3 years ago. That is stupidly overpriced. Also pre2001 e46s almost always have ripped subframes, so expect to pay 1k+ for that.
                Current:
                1989 325i
                1988 M3
                1987 325ic
                Past:
                2001 330ci
                2001 M3

Subframe rips are very true, mine was ripped and poorly repaired by previous owner. I purchased mine without knowing about the subframe issues. I will NEVER own another e46. Try looking into e39s. I had one and enjoyed it dearly. No issues with subframe rips but typical BMW coolant overhauls is expected.

This. You can get a pretty nice E39 for that money.

Poor OP is from Michigan. Ain't shit for BMW's in Michigan. Especially not in Detroit...

For that mileage the price isn't bad. I'd still keep looking though.

I agree on the e39, you can get a real nice low mileage one for that money. I just bought a 528iT for $3200, needs some minimal work(needed rear tires, secondary air pump, maybe O2 sensor) but damn these things are cheap these days, and I absolutely love it.

As long as that e39 doesn't have an V8+auto trans

With a manual tranny and sport package? No, you can't. I'm looking for a sporty coupe, needs to be clean, reliable and not a cop magnet. Not necessarily a BMW but what else is there, really?
