Glow in the dark roads make their debut in the netherlands

(Mods feel free to move to OT if this is too OT)

I thought this was really cool

Light-absorbing glow-in-the-dark road markings have replaced streetlights on a 500m (0.3 mile) stretch of highway in the Netherlands.
Studio Roosegaarde promised the design back in 2012, and after cutting through rather a lot of government red tape we can finally see the finished product.
One Netherlands news report said, "It looks like you are driving through a fairytale," which pretty much sums up this extraordinary project. The studio aims to bring technology and design to the real world, with practical and beautiful results.
Back in October 2012, Daan Roosegaarde, the studio's founder and lead designer, told us: "One day I was sitting in my car in the Netherlands, and I was amazed by these roads we spend millions on but no one seems to care what they look like and how they behave. I started imagining this Route 66 of the future where technology jumps out of the computer screen and becomes part of us."
Part of that vision included weather markings—snowdrops, for instance, would appear when the temperature reached a certain level. For now though, the stretch of the N329 highway in Oss features only the glow-in-the-dark road markings, created using a photo-luminescent powder integrated into the road paint, developed in conjunction with road construction company Heijmans.

I could see something like this helping cut down on light pollution.

I wonder what the cost per mile is compared to conventional street lighting.

What if there's a cow on the road.
        Looks dumb.

If your lights are on, wouldn't the line stop glowing and therefor defeat the purpose? I don't have an opinion on the looks, I just feel its almost pointless all together.

Lane and road markings I understand. Especially because you'll be able to get a general idea of the road ahead, beyond your headlights. I like this quite a bit.

Dynamic paint in the middle of the road though, would severely hamper seeing road obstacles, such as animals. The complex lines that would be glowing would break silhouettes, and effectively camouflage animals in the dark. That would be no bueno.

I agree that part seems too clever by half

The only animals in the Netherlands are cows.

Looks great. It's true, road technology still sucks these days. It's nice to see something innovative like this. Although I'm sure the idea has been shot down in the past.

I would think headlights would make up the difference if you're worried about animals in the road...

Light pollution is a big pain in the ass - especially for me. I'm an amateur astronomer and astronomy educator. The International Dark Sky Association has made some headway in the last several years in reducing light pollution, but as most towns and municipalities switch over to LED lights, the light pollution has shot through the roof. If that continues, we'll likely only see a dozen or so stars at night, when we're supposed to see between 6 and 7 thousands stars and the Milkyway. Plus, light pollution is just terrible for the life patterns of nocturnal animals. Roadways are the worst offenders so I would love to see these glowing roadways come to fruition.
