With really good tuning and an engine in top condition, you should be able to get reasonably good reliability with about 7psi of boost. Really good tuning can't be had with the stock DME and a chip. You'd have to switch to a Mega Squirt (or similar) and spend the time on a dyno to get the WOT throttle and part throttle operation right. The other option for the power level you seem to require would be to drop in an S54 or a lightweight V8. Bith those are iffy because you won't be able to out in a big enough radiator.
There is just no cheap way to get there if you want reasonable reliability. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I have to agree. My 91 318is would break sideways quick. You need to learn how to handle it before going to more power.Comment

Didnt he say its his first car ever and he doesnt even own it yet?!?! OP id recomend fully going through your car and changing all old 25+ year old parts that need to be swapped. suspensions not cheap to begin with, along with that all the little things add up too. THEN drive it around and if you want more boost it or 24v swap it. there is a lot more reasons for why people choose e30's than just HP gains.

All the e30 motors are pretty much maxed out as far as the basics go, you're not gonna see any real gains from intakes/exhausts/whatever else you get from a lot of other cars, a chip is worth it but it's still not a particularly big difference. You'll get a little bit of power from all the bolt ons but you'll end up spending a ton in the process that could be better spent elsewhere(ask me how I know). If you're not happy with the power it's got the reality is you have two options, boost or swap. There are plenty of things you can do to make e30s more fun for not a lot of money, more power isn't one of those things though.sigpicComment

I wonder this, every week some one comes here and asks the exact same question. Its not that its a bad thing its just the information can be easily attained by looking and searching.
To Op, put a metal bar on the front of your car, attach it to two horses. Bam horsepower.
Edit: Damn Farbin beat me to it.
