    It's controlled by two "banks".

Basically two if everything, meaning one for each bank.
Google bmw m70 engine and you'll see what I mean.
People always say this but I own 2 e30s so im already maintaining 2 m20s (not uncommon these days)

the M70 block is cast iron.

also, even then it depends on where the car is from. refineries in different areas had different compositions, including sulfur content. Sulfur content in today's fuel is also a lot lower than it was in the early 90s due to more regulation and better processes.

Yea it had been awhile since I had read about it.. The cylinder liners were Nikasil, and the gasoline caused them to breakdown

I thought it was M60s and M70s, I may be wrong.. But I thought both the x40i and x50i both had the nikasil... Id have to do some reading to be sure thought

I'm pretty sure they have 3. 1 for each bank, and 1 to make the two banks talk to each other. But yeah, they have 2 of almost everything and it's a royal pain in the ass to work on. We had 2 e31s in our shop at one point, both 850i's with manual transmissions. They were fun to drive and comfortable, but overall just felt fat and a little sluggish. I would love to take it on a long road trip though.

I've seen only a handful of these but the only 2 I saw that were manual was at Castro Motorsports in Hollywood and also at Bimmerfest last month. I think they're cool to the right person but not really my style.
