Same thing happened to me in my wrecked e30. The tire started shaking. I emergency pulled into a parking lot, right as I did my wheel flew off and I hopped out of my car and chased after it. Wheel bolts were snapped clean in half.

Northern - What Obey meant about nail polish was not to put it on the lug nut threads to act as a kind of loc tite. What he meant was to brush a line of a brightly colored nail polish on to the sides of the flat squared off places on the outside of the lug nut AFTER torquing to specifications.

That way is some Houdini (makes things disappear) decides to try and loosen your lug nuts to steal a rim and stops 1/2 way (hears a noise, cant get the lug nuts off, etc) then one can inspect each of the lug nut outer flats and see if that dried dab or line of nail polish is still in pristine condition or if it has wear marks through it that would be caused by someone other than the owner or repair person placing a wrench or lug wrench on the lug nut(s).

Its a visual indicator of tampering!

Its actually a pretty great idea , but would require scraping off the nail polish every time the lug nuts are removed and retightened. Or I guess one could just nail polish right over the same spot so it was fresh.

I think I may hit up my girlfriends unused nail polish collection and add a color that she does not use to my tool box.

in the second pic you can kind of see the damage to the pan/shield I mentioned previously and in the third you can see what damage was done to the inside of the wheel

UPDATES! so I need a new hub 100%.. the holes are stripped but the real question is what part(s) do I need? just a rear hub assembly? the wheel bearing seems fine but might as well do it while I'm at it

Often times when removing the hub, the cent race of the bearing will come out, destroying the bearing. Get a new bearing and replace it.

Wheel bearing, Hub, backing plate if bent, and whatever brake bits you broke. Possibly arm if you bent it (Doubt it).

wheel issues

I used to torque my wheels to 80ft/lb with a torque stick until my wife complained about a rattle in one of the back wheels. I told her it was probably a rock but upon inspecting I found one lug nut completely out. I now tighten them down to 100 ft/lb and haven't had any problems since.

This has actually happened to me twice. Day after I bought the car, there was huge rattling because the lugs were loose and had broken. Next time I didn't realize we had fixed the problem by only using 3 lug nuts, which didn't go well. Tire stayed on both times so I got to learn my lesson fairly painlessly.

basically, considering my strict budget, I am thinking of going a route where I just retap the hub because only one hole is stripped.. thanks to Vivek I inspected the threads and my initial assumption of them being completely fucked was wrong! woo!

what are your opinions on tapping the hole?
