Why is there such a large difference in price for IE's stroker kits? Is the difference in performance that much or is it just cause the crank is more money for the 3.0? I'm considering an engine rebuild for my M20 and am trying to figure out an affordable route. My other alternative is an M50 swap. For anyone who has done any IE kit or an M50 swap, what was the total cost for the whole project?

:| Strokers. For the $$$ you spend and the trouble you go through fo gain HP, you will be like this:
The better choice is m50 swap :D
Unless you're rolling in money and have the desire for a sick 3.0L built to the balls, and for some reason prefer keeping the 12V head.....go for it.
If you even are even considering the total cost.....which you are......forget the strokers completely. The better deal is M50.
M50: Most shops charge about $3000 labor. Engines $1-1500, various parts will sum up at least $1000, more likely much more. The BMW shop near me charges a flat $5000 for everything, but they absorb some of the cost of the parts to sell the work probably.

i want to do a 3.0. of course for me, an M50 conversion is out of the question financially. I really just want more torque, I see the extra power as being free. I'm not doing a thing though until I either become really rich or my engine finally dies :)
the M20 gets hated on a lot around here. :(

Yeah, but for a 89+ i, there really isn't all that much that has to be changed. The media libraries are pretty compatible: radiator/cooling system, transmisisons/driveshafts, etc.
however, an eta might be more of a task to do, so maybe a budget stroker would be a good idea. (My uncle......grown up so he actually has money for this stuff.....is looking at M50 swaps because he is in love with his eta, but I also have him looking at converting to 2.7i.)
for a 318..........there are definately some more considerable for changing systems. but what are the other alternatives? M20 swap like Bryson? High-comp built up M42 like bimmerman was looking at?

For our original poster, Smoove, I recommend M50. It makes better money sense for him. His car is CD ready.

i'll let you know when i'm done, the way it looking for me, it will be a lot cheaper then a m50,
this is including extenisve headwork, balancing, high-com pistons, eta crank, headers(possible), all gaskets, driving mountings replaced, and maybe a cam, if i can find one fro the right price....
