    SCORE on my drive shaft!

So i just pulled the driveshaft out of my e30 and besides the guibo being completely mangled and shredded, the two ears off the transmission case are ripped off, and of course the trans mounts are shredded the driveshaft is a rebuilt unit with Made in USA u joints in it, greaseable too.

this means that for $50 in u joints, and $40 in labor i can have a brand new driveshaft!!!!!

i now have 3 drive shafts lol, 1 good one that i'm taking the CSB off and will probably sell, 1 bad one that has a good CSB and front section, and the one off my e30 that has semi-bad rear u joints but are easily replaceable.

a good weekend for me. i also scored a set of 'weaves and near mint good year eagle GT1's, and a complete glove box!

    i think i'll take a look at that 318i tomorrow, i could use a 30mpg commuter.

i will gladly grease it every oil change just like i do all my cars with greaseable bushings. i'm surprised more things on the bmw's arent made to be greaseable. i had special "energy" greaseable sway bar bushings on my jeep, along with the entire front steering/suspension where everything was greaseable as well.

Yeah, it's too bad that the E30's don't have greasable/replaceable u-joints in the driveshaft, could save you a lot of money. Next time I need to replace mine, I'm going with one from Driveline Service of Portland. Their units use greasable u-joints and are very well built.

How much are those? My u-joints have a bout 20k left on them.

IMO, greaseable u-joints are bad. They create a weak point in the u-joint where it can crack and come apart.

well thats arguable. in the off-road community guys use both, the hardcore guys tend to stay more towards the non greaseable and the weekend warriors like the greaseable. but there is no way an e30 is going to stress the joints that much.

having said that, i dont have to put greaseable joints back in anyways.

Non-greasable u-joints are garbage. The tried them on midsize and full size transport truck, don't last more than 100,000, whereas greasables (that are constantly greased) can last a million.

I seriously doubt that a grease channel in a u-joint is going to weaken it to the point of failure in an E30. Maybe if you are running 500 + hp and drag slicks.

                  Keep it slideways!!

i found on a corvette forum that a guy making like 400hp broke a u joint on the grease track, but another guy says he is making over 500hp and has never broken a greaseable u joint.... interesting.

I still say if no zert fitting=stronger and stronger=better, then there is only one choice.

you drive a 168hp car with no torque, it doesnt even remotely begin to matter.

even a turbo m3 is hardly going to put strain on a u joint.

if 500hp corvettes do ok with them and so do 800lb ft diesels...
