Congrats Fox! I went in the Navy right out of high school because I didn't know what career path I wanted. What if I went 2-4 years to college and decided I hate my particular career choice? No Army or Marines for me, they get shot at. Navy or Air Force.... If the ship goes down I can swim better than I can fly so I went Navy; spent 4 years a a cook on a submarine.
Being out on your own, seeing things and places you won't see otherwise is a good thing. I found later other benefits.... The first 10 years I owned my house I didn't pay property taxes. Veteran's Excemption. Want a job with the Gov't later, priority placement. I'm 53 (where's the time go?) but have 34 years service, retiring at 55 is good.
Congrats and enjoy the ride.
Dan

Oh yeah, something you'll probably find out on your own anyway:
Recruiters are the biggest liars the planet has ever seen. They make the greasiest used car salesmen look like saints. If your recruiter told you that you'll get to be stationed anywhere you want if you graduate top of your class you've been lied to. The Navy sends you wherever the hell the Navy wants you. It doesn't matter if you're the dumbest peanut in the turd or if you're the next Einstein and you took over teaching the classes from the instructor.
You can request a posting and get the same odds of actually getting it that everyone else does. Considering that most of the people actually processing your paperwork are not stationed where they want to be you can imaging how motivated they are to send you where you want. In my boot camp company about 90% of the people that requested east coast got west coast, and 90% that requested east coast got west. A few got cool assignments like Italy or Japan, and one poor sucker got Diego Garcia.

My recruiter didn't tell me that. The lady down on MEPS did. My recruiter hasn't lied to me yet tho. He's actually been really honest to me. I've had my pastor from my church go talk to him (he was a Navy Seal for 10 years, in the navy for 25+).
My pastor said everything my recruiter said was true.
So, I guess I have that rare recruiter that doesn't lie. hah Luck?
Yeah, being in the Navy will be hard being clean, since im a slob in my house. haha.

When I was in boot camp youd; polish your shoes and iron your shirt and pants to avoid getting a very angry instructor in your face. Praise? Are you kidding me? The closest thing to a "give this man an outstanding" I ever heard spoken to anyone while in boot was the severely sarcastic kind that everybody knew meant we were about to get worked.
that poor sucker that got stationed in Diego Garcia is probably still there, because he had so much fun. I spent two years there and tried to stay. Been in 14 years and now I'm stationed at Great Lakes as an RDC. Oh and I'll teach you to not be a SLOB!!
